Back when heavy, wooden shipping crates were lifted onto boats by hand, the blokes who did it—porters—enjoyed the golden-brown biscuit and nutty caramel malt flavors of the beer bearing their namesake.

Coffee colored. Head dissipates quickly, leaving no lace behind -- proper to the style. Prunes and nuts in the mild aroma. Grain and chocolate in the taste. Simple but robust. Notably missing the diacetyl common to some dark brews. Fuller body than a lot of porters, along with warmth from the 6.5% ABV.

Aroma is fruit, mild sweetness and creeping chocolate. The flavor is fruit/mild dark fruit, dark malts, chocolate/mild dark chocholate and an acidic/mildly sweet finish.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a small light brown head. Smells of dark roasted grain, very slight coffee. Tastes of dark roasted grain with chocolate finish and slight coffee. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a good beer.

12oz. bottle poured a nice three finger tan thick head of foam that after several minutes faded to about 1/8 inch and stayed the duration. A very dark brown that when held to the light I can watch the bubbles.
I am surprised the smell is mostly the hops.
The taste is much better, roasted malt, a sweet caramel, a semi dry.
The feel is medium, not very creamy, but not light or thin.
Overall it is good, tasty.

Lakefront blows high and low in my ratings of its beers. This is English style porter is mid-pack.
a) Lighter side of brown pours with ruby highlights. Less opaque, weak head, minor lace.
s) Too faint. Dark fruits, cola, not enough bittering or roasting.
t) I get cola, or Dr Pepper along with the traditional roasted malt up front. maybe some coffee, cherry, and prune notes in the finish. slight hop and must too.
f) Too light - thin, why I prefer "stouts".
o) Much much better at cask temp.

Nice drinking beer, not overdone, easy to session. I enjoy nice simple porters that are not trying to be more than they need to be, this one does that. Not as robust as some I have had but it is enjoyable in its own way

Looking for something new at the beer store and opted for a Porter from one of my all-time favorite breweries.
Long neck bottle poured into my Libby Imperial Pint glass. Best by 03 APR 2019 ink-jetted to the back label.
L -- Dark brown color with ruby highlights. Not as opaque as some, but within style range. Thin, creamy looking, light tan head that holds up well.
S -- Light roastiness with hints of dark fruit and even some DMS.
T -- Roasted malt up front, some mellow coffee notes and dark fruit notes in the finish. Some hop bitterness (herbal in contrast to the roasted malt bitterness) in the aftertaste. There's also a light musty character in the aftertaste, but not distracting.
F -- Mouthfeel is light medium and the body is rather thin to style. Also somewhat dry, rather than creamy.
O -- Not as chocolatey or caramel-charactered as the style suggests. However, the roasted malts and light fruit character certainly make this a flavorful drinker if you like dark, top-fermented beers.

12oz bottle, BEST BY 03APR2019. Brown-mahogany colored ale capped with a creamy beige head. Caramel and dark malt aroma with some leafy/earthy hops and a touch of nutty grain. Sweet malty flavors of caramel, toffee, nutty and toasty grain, mild chocolate, coffee, and tea; earthy & herbal hop finish. Medium body ample carbonation, balanced and semi-dry finish. This is a well put together beer and well worth the try.
