Anai, Lakefront’s Catering Sous Chef, brewed this Mexican Hot Chocolate Ale. She wanted a beer that tastes like the Mexican hot chocolate she and her family drink alongside slices of Rosca de Reyes cake, as they celebrate El Día De Reyes. Pouring up dark-brown with a fluffy mocha-colored head, Anai’s beer delivers all the flavors found in a mug of Mexican hot chocolate: roasty, semisweet chocolate with slight honey-like notes, followed by spicy-sweet cinnamon and nutmeg. Finishes with just enough chili-pepper heat to keep warm until spring.

L - Dark brown. Appears clear. Tall, light brown, persistent head.

S - Sweet milk chocolate. A little bit of spice.

T - Sweet dark roasted malts. Dark chocolate and a little coffee. Peppers with some heat.

F - Medium-light.

O - Some interesting flavors, but ultimately too sweet for my taste.

A Mexican hot chocolate porter? Its deep brown/ruby colored, tan head. Smells too much like chocolate and spices, cinnamon, nutmeg. And the flavor matches, a balance too hard toward the chocolate and spices and an unbalanced chili pepper heat. Medium bodied if you can bring yourself to swallow. Another My Turn loser.

Poured 12oz bottle into snifter. It is dark-brown with a 1.5 finger mocha-colored head that leaves minimal lacing on my glass. Aroma is chocolate with light notes of spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and chilies., The flavors a supposed to resemble a mug of Mexican hot chocolate, but are rather timid. The malts are roasty with semi-sweet chocolate, followed by light cinnamon and nutmeg. Finishes with some chili-pepper but no real heat. Feel is light medium as this resembles the body of a brown ale with light carbonation. It's decent, but not something I would purchase again.
