The Brewers’ Reserve Series lets our brewhouse team play with barrel-aging niche beer styles. Four years ago, they brewed a Barleywine so reckless, so rambunctious, they had no option but mellow out in bourbon barrels. And mellow it did; into finely-folded layers of caramel, toffee-coated almonds, vanilla, pepper and dried fruit.

Poured from a 12 ounce can, the body is a dark black with a small initial head. Some lacing
Aroma is mostly bourbon with a wee bit of sweet malt.
Following the nose, taste is a very decadent mix of bourbon and sweet malt. The first swallow comes across as the booziest caramel you have ever eaten. Fortunately the very sweet flavor quickly dissipates. Later warming significantly reduces the sweetness.
The bourbon hit is significant but didn't taste harsh. At that ABV, one might expect more of a burn. Once fully room temperature, the ABV is fully masked. Amazing.
Mouthfeel is heavy and almost syrupy. Carbonation is medium.

From a 12oz can. Canned on January, 24, 2024
This is a daek amber pouring beer. Very dar, so dark I can't tell if it's clear or not. There's a 2 finger tan head to this beer that looks quite nice with smaller bubbles. The head retention is quite amazing for the ABV. Once it dissipates, it forms a ring at the edge of the glass with no lacing.
Nose is so full of dark fruit. The raisin and plum are so powerful here. I get tons of caramel and toffee. So much vanilla hits my nose with this beer. These are all so strong and pleasing. I also get a hint of ample syrup, though there's none here.
Taste - The dark fruit hits right away. This flavor mellows and others take its place. I get a huge hit of caramel and toffee, with a maple syrup like flavor. I then, on the back, get notes of vanilla and oak.
Thick, smooth and very full body to this beer. I am getting no burn here at all. This is so smooth.
Wow, this beer is a top notch beer in my book. Damn delicious.

From a 12oz can:
Appearance: Dark brown, ok head at first, fades out.
Smell: Big barrel and a maple-chocolate note first, settles into what smells like a wood-vanilla milkshake.
Taste: Big sweet vanilla caramel note followed with a pretty big booze note. The booze recedes a bit as it warms, gives a chocolate-ty note with booze undertones.
Overall: Really impressive nose and very chocolate-ty barrel. Needs to warm up to settle the booze down somewhat. Still a very good beer!
