Inspired by the decadent German chocolate sponge cake of the same name, this stout’s roasty base gets layered with cherries and chocolate. The velvety nitro pour tops off with a creamy head, just like its namesake.

On tap at The Brass Tap, Cedar Falls, IA; served in a 5-ounce "snulip" glass. Lightproof black, with a dense cream-colored nitro head. Excellent retention. This was served cold, and it took a little while for the flavors to start popping through. Notes of chocolate and sour cherry on the nose and palate, accompanied by roast malt and a little char. The roasty bitterness is muted. The finish is dry and slightly astringent, with a tinge of tart fruit lingering on the palate. Not quite as big on the Black Forest Cake character as I had hoped, but it's much better the warmer it gets. As always, YMMV.
