As both Paul and Graham are rail enthusiasts the beer is named after the firebox in a steam engine.
A reddish deep brown coloured beer which is a deceptively drinkable strong bitter with a fine combination of citrus hops and cherry fruit bittersweet flavours which gives a strong dry bitter finish.

July 2007: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned. ABV is 6.0%. Brewed by RCH Brewery, bottled by Integrated Bottling Solutions. Amber coloured beer, huge and lasting off-white head. Pleasant hoppy and fruity aroma, also hints of toffee and oak. The flavour is fruity and malty, with a noticeable alcohol presence. Dry hops in the finish. A powerful extra strong bitter, but no session beer - one bottle is enough.

On cask at the Diamond

A_pours a mid golden amber with no head

S- a certain solvent like quality with a bit of caramel malt

T_more of the same wirh the.aromas. A very english taste to it. Caramel notes dominate and you really get the alcoohol. Small hints of fruit are evident as well and the fiinsh is mildly dry and a tad astringent.

M_light bodied with a typical low cask ale carbonation.

D_the alcohol detracts somewhat from the overall enjoyment here. The malt level is good but overall tis a bit too strong for an ESB in my opinion. This is the second of two first time in America casks for the Diamond. The last one Harviestoun's Ice Maiden which was more my cup of tea.

Light orange. Not really white foam, quite compact and abundant, for an english ale.
Some yeast cloudiness at a second pour.
Good smell: hop, earth, malt, toffee, caramel, vanilla and orange.
Malty and chewy taste, with notes of hop and caramel. Some sweetiness in the end. Note of orange marmelade.
Average body.
Some balancing hop in the aftertaste.

A - Pours a slightly hazy copper with an orange hue. A half inch of thick white head reduces and sits as a small cap. Small bubbles of low carbonation.

S - Toffee, pear, green apple, grass.

T - Mouthful of fruit at first which becomes toffee-like in the middle and coating. Finishes with slight oily hop bitterness which follows on into the aftertaste with vanilla in the background.

M - Medium-full body and low carbonation.

D - A lovely bitter from a brewery which doesn't ever seem to disappoint.

Bottle-conditioned in a 500ml brown bottle, BBE MAR 07. Served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: pours a murky (due to disturbed yeast-sediments), pale copper-ish hue, coming with an effervescent, tight spongey and thick beer head, only breaking down ve...ry slowly and leaving a thin layer of tight froth throughout the drink; medium-carbonation at work in the glass.
S: floating, sweetish limy aroma along with a hint of butterscotch, and very light and refreshing flowery (like orangey blossom) scent, supported by juicy dark malts in the background. Overall very light, soul-lifting and aromatic.
T: a thick-bodied and creamy-textured, toffee-ish malt palate backed by a sour touch of fruits, dryish nuttiness, and semi-roasted bitterness from dark/choco. malts; turning dryer and bitter after the mid-taste, leaving an herbal hoppyness with slightly woody and resinous touch in the long lingering and satisfyingly bitter finish.
M&D: very lively on the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied and beautifully balanced premium bitter. An enjoyable and quaffable ale~~
