Appearance: More brown than amber with a decent head and good lacing.
Smell: A blast of apricots.
Taste: I enjoyed Big Sky's regular IPA for its hop bite. The barrel aging has taken almost all the hop taste away, it is now dominated by earthy and woody bourbon flavors, like bourbon without the alcohol. A little bitterness can be detected in the aftertaste.
Drinkability: Interesting to try once, but I like the un-aged much better.
On-tap at the Happy Gnome after their Big Sky beer dinner. I've had a few barrel-aged beers but unfortunately this one is my least favorite so far. The bourbon just takes over.

10/28/06- Had while on vacation in Montana. On tap at the Big Sky Brewery in Missoula, MT.
Presentation- From the tap into two taster size glasses.
Appearance- Dark amber colored pour. 1/2 inch head which a decent amount stays for the entirety. Lace trails coat the glass.
Smell- Not a huge scented brew. Some mild citrus hop notes, some light roasted malt and a bit of alcohol as well.
Taste- Bourbon flavor comes in big time on the first sip. Not a hop bomb. Equal portions of grapefruit and pine matched up against mild toasted malts. Seems like there is a dash of vanilla as well. Kinda strange flavor melds, but good.
Mouthfeel- Seemed a bit overcarbonated. Short lived flavor with virtually no aftertaste.
Drinkability- A bourbon IPA just seems like a weird combo to me...but it worked pretty well in this case. Would have liked to see more in your face hop action and a less pronounced bourbon flavor. I'll still have it again if it's there when I go back.
