Served on tap at Barley's in Overland Park, KS

Appeared pretty decent. Really great head.

It smelt oat-y. Really simple, a little coffee, little chocolate.

Taste was awesome. Didn't really taste the oak all that much honestly. But my palette was "well seasoned" with plenty of other beers. All I could taste was chocolate, and oats... oats for days really.

Mouthfeel was very nice. Velvety, light- all of that.

Overall I'd say drink this brew if you can- if you dig drinkable oatmeal stouts. Could be a nice session brew.

On tap at the taproom.

This pours dark brown with see through edges, a short head fading to a ring with minimal lace. On the nose there is bourbon, flaked oats, a bit of vanilla. The bourbon holds sway here. In the mouth the bourbon melds with some indefinite sweet notes, cherry and vanilla maybe, with some robust roasted oats further back. The body is thin, not especially surprising given the drinkable base beer, but it probably should be a bit bigger to stand up to the bourbon.

Overall, this is an interesting variation worth a shot, but the base beer probably isn't a great candidate for barrel aging.

I tried this 2009 vintage of barrel aged Slow Elk Oatmeal Stout on-tap at Hamilton's in San Diego.

A very dark brown body with a slim dark brown head that doesn't really leave anything behind.

The aroma has lots of bourbon. Honestly, I don't get too much else out of it.

The barrel characteristics overpower the base beer here, which I am never really a fan of. Lots of bourbon, hints of vanilla and wood. Underneath that I pick up a little bit of chocolate malt.

The mouthfeel could definitely use a little more creaminess and body, especially for an oatmeal stout.

Slow Elk from the barrel didn't impress me. Too much bourbon, mild beer flavors and a weak mouthfeel.
