Forbidden as it was to brew in summer, a stronger beer – the Märzen – was brewed earlier in March. It would finally be served at the Oktoberfest, under the “Heaven of Bavaria”. We have returned once again to the age-old recipe and recreated that gloriously smooth, honey-coloured piece of history from times gone by. And all is brewed with due reverence to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.

two 11.2 oz. bottles poured into big mug
(best before end of June 2018 printed on bottom of label)
L: bronze, clear, topped with 1/2- to 3/4-inch head of beige foam; up to light it has some amber in it, bleeding the bronze into a copper color; some sticking off the head; keeps a thin collar of beige foam; no major lacing; the color is stunning and just screams "Marzen!!!"
S: super fruity, sweet ... dried apricot, candied apricot
T: first sip is almost 1:1 with the nose, very fruity sweet, but then with blunt force comes a wall of earthy hops ... dirt hops, almost medicinal at first they're so strong, but as the beer warms and the palate adjusts, the hops subside into more standard earthy range (tasty not medicinal), even giving off a bit of black pepper, and they subside enough to allow some of that dried apricot sweetness to peek in here and there; big hop bite, though ... big and even toasted a bit; in fact, the more it warms the more you tasted toasted notes ... and strangely, it's not as much toasted malt as toasted hops, at least for me; orange peel; burnt toffee
F: simple, almost a tad soft after a hard pour but still crisp enough to make it enjoyable; not heavy but almost middleweight
O: I'm super, super happy I bought this 6-pack, and with a best-before date of 6/18, I might take Hacker-Pschorr up on that and buy a couple three more sixers to put away for the spring; the mix of super fruity sweet nose with a hoppy flavor makes for a sensory carnival

Lucious mouthfeel, beautiful color. A malty treat for any ‘shoulder season’. Just wish it wasn’t in one of those sub-volume 11.2 oz bottles (I want my full 12! ! - kidding). Great beer.
Appreciate its surprising availability - even in semi-remote basin & range Nevada towns.

Gorgeous pour... amber carmel color... It was lively and vibrant in the glass... I could smell a sweet malt to start... Head faded rather quickly... subtle nobel hop nose... and subtle bitter finish...

Picked up a Pack at Costco! Loved the taste. Good full mouthfeel, rich smooth taste that you expect from a Marzen. Beautiful dark color and pours really well with medium foam. Tastes wheaty and no sour or any other funk. Finished the whole pack quick!

Dark but clear amber to chestnut brown with a khaki foam head of moderate height clinging in fine yet also bubbly ridges.
This one is on the sweeter end, almost prune, also exhibiting a bit of chestnut in flavor, while pleasantly bready too, of dark biscuit or pumpernickel, perhaps even a hint of pretzel.

Pours a foggy bronze-copper with a couple fingers of white foam. Aroma is spicy, grassy, and herbal hops. Malts are biscuits, bread, and caramel. Flavor profile is spicy, grassy, and herbal hops with some biscuity, bready, and caramelly malts behind. Nice balance between the hops and malts. Bits and pieces of toffee and fig pop through. Mouth feel is medium in thickness. Texture has a very soft crispness and effervescence before it flattens out. Overall, great balance in this crushable fest bier.
