At the end of the 19th century, Munich took great pleasure in two new beaming additions to the city: the golden Angel of Peace and the first lager beer speciality, Münchner Gold. Still brewed by us to this day according to the age-old recipe, this slightly stronger beer is a mature masterpiece and delights with its enticing malty aroma and its slightly stronger original wort.
Hops: Hallertauer Tradition, Hallertauer Herkules.
Malt: Marthe, Grace and Catamaran barley varieties.

500ml can.
L: Clear and pale golden with several streams of micro bubbles rising constantly to one finger of bright white head.
S&T: Biscuity malt, lemon pith, dry finish.
F: Medium body, rich & oily mouthfeel, crisp finish (albeit a little gassy).
O: A solid helles. This kind of German lager beats most other generic European lagers.

On tap a Plonk! A rather interesting beer and wine bar in Houston.
A: Pours a brilliantly clear golden/yellow color. A white head forms and recedes rather quickly. Spotty lace is left behind. I think this is more a function of how the bar poured it than anything...but the clarity is impressive.
S: Biscuit and sourdough bread. A touch grainy, a touch of a lemon rind pith. Very simple but enjoyable.
T: Like the nose, this is simple. Baked bread, biscuit, sourdough flavors. Lemon like hops, but a more malty sweetness finish.
M/O: A medium body, with moderate carbonation. This is ultra smooth and clean. This is more semi sweet, but it all leads to something I can drink in big gulps.
I'm sure this isn't the freshest keg in the world. Even so, this is really enjoyable. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this before, but it is a very solid example of the style. Of course I would like to have a fresher version if possible, but as is, I can come back to this with ease.

On draught at the Crossbar Der Biergarten
Gold color, thin head, high clarity, no lacing.
The toasted malt and hops flavor/balance is great. A pleasant crisp and clean finish.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 500mL in a pint glass. From my favourite The Beer Store on Goyeau St. in nearby downtown Windsor. My first beer from the Munich, Germany brewery.

This is a sister beer to Paulaner Munich lager, but there is a sizeable gap between them IMO. This offering by Hacker-Pschorr is decent enough w/cracker bready malt character and very subtle lemony hops, but it lacks the unique qualities of its sister beer. Can be semi cloying as well. An overall fine beer, but it treads water too close to AAL territory while missing the mark of most excellent German lagers. Would definitely reach for other Germans before this one again.

Can 0.5 L.
Light golden body with a medium, fizzy, white head, mostly diminishing with a fair lacing.
Moderate malty aroma (cereal) with light hoppy notes (herbal).
Moderate sweet flavour nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hoppy note.
Light-to-medium body with a watery texture; average carbonation.

Fortunately my favorite local establishment always has a fantastic selection of German and Czech beers on tap.”Gold” is a staple of the rotation. Outstanding helles. Like all Hacker beers, consistently excellent.

Crystal clear straw, big white head, superb retention, splotchy rings of lace
Sweet, bready malt, drying hay aroma
Just sweet malt, the slightest hint of noble hops, and a touch of sulfur in flavor
Light bodied, appropriately carbonated, VERY drinkable
Not the biggest Helles fan, but I could settle in for a night of this and some hearty food.

It pours a slightly cloudy gold, crowned with a fine, lacy head that invites you in. The aroma reveals layers of cereal grains and roasted nuts, offering a warm, nutty complexity. On the palate, the moderate carbonation and medium body provide a pleasant structure, delivering flavors of dried fruit and delicate floral notes. The finish is crisp and remarkably balanced, rounding out the experience with finesse. While this style may not be my go-to, I can appreciate the finer points of this beer.
