This was my favorite Butte Creek beer. Still was a distant preference from dozens of Sierra Nevada beers down the road though.
Definitely on the darker end of the ipa spectrum, this was an auburn to light brown color with off white 3/4" head. Aroma didn't have what we think of as aroma hops, but they still kick down some C hop (Cascade & Chinook?) grapefruit and bitterness, but there is still plenty of caramel notes from the crystal/cara malting that is in a large dosage.
I could dig it because back in the 90s there weren't a lot of ipas out there, and you were pretty much just hoping for a lot of PacNW hops, regardless of what variety. Breweries were still going big on the "balance" thing so you got a hearty amount of that cara/crystal malt giving way to loads of hefty, sticky caramel like notes alongside the grapefruit hop note.
It was another one of those beers they threw a big "ORGANIC" right out in front and primarily seemed to rely on that marketing angle.

A decent take on an American IPA, well-balanced, if not particularly hoppy. Pours a nice hazy brownish-gold, with solid lacing on the glass. It won't blow your mind, but it's a highly drinkable, perfectly pleasant beer. Highly recommended for anyone unused to IPAs or adverse to bitter brews.
