Tremendous garbage. My first experience with the infamous Trafalgar brewery, this is an identity crisis in a bottle. It's been about three and a half years since I had this, but it was bad enough that I have a vendetta. It's bad enough that I'm allowed to be petty about it, too.

Looks like a porter with delapidated lacing. Not unpleasant, but decidedly lacking character. Smells like... orange zest mixed with porter, and a tad cloying at that. The orange hits with a vengeance on the tongue, similarly to that early-morning mistake where you just brushed your teeth and decided to have some orange juice afterwards. The chocolate kicks around mostly after you've already swallowed it, and doesn't seem to know what it's doing there. Chocolate and orange are two flavours that can meld fairly well when executed properly - this beer tastes like a mess of chocolate, orange and porter that do not mingle effectively. The chocolate and orange seem to be trying to kill each other rather than getting along, and the orange is winning. The feel is just puckery and dry with no smoothness at all, which is not what you want from a porter, or really anything. It's pretty bad, and you'd be better off drinking something less gimmicky.

Nothing particularly wrong with this guy, it's just a little bland. Although it is better than BMC

Cola dark. Moderate head that settles to a heavy film, spotty lace.

This is pretty much liquid Terry's Chocolate Orange, just not as sweet or chocolatey. A little touch of charcoal, lots of faux orange. Passable as a dessert beer, but nothing really special.

Pours black with little to no head, smells of pungent orange.
Tastes of orange followed by a roasty flavour, good finish sadly not much carbonation. Overall not bad for a flavoured porter

Wasn't able to taste the chocolate in the porter and the first impression is that this taste a bit like cough / cold syrup from 90s.

Bottle: Poured a translucid black color porter with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of cheap orange liquor with light dry roasted malt is quite atrocious. Taste is also dominated by gross orange liquor notes with some light dry roasted malt. Body is quite thin with good carbonation. About as bad as I was expecting.

Dark brown pour. Little to no head.Aromas of the obvious chocolate and orange. Over powering taste of orange over chocolate. No carbonation.

Purchased at the LCBO for around $4.00 for a 500ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a tulip.

A- Opens poorly and pours no head at all. Good and dark though.

S- Lots of orange peel here. Bit of malt. Very nice

T- Not so good. Orange hits you then a touch of chocolate. Weak porter.

M- Touch bitter from the orange peel. Not much carbonation

O- Not so good. Will not buy again.

Food Pairing

This ok brew did alright with..... Potato chips.... Just to get this thing down.

Enjoy

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before April 2015. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a dark cherry cola colour, topped with one finger of bubbly, light tan-coloured froth that quickly fades. More bubbles are left ringing the edge of the glass in a loose, filmy collar, without much of a lace or cap. Not so attractive visually, but the aroma is surprisingly appealing - mandarin orange comes through pretty loudly, with minor hints of roasted malts and milk chocolate. Easy to like, but one-dimensional.

Odd is the best word I can use to describe this one's flavour. Roasted malt, baker's chocolate and plum are what I pick out initially, with juicy orange flavour taking centre stage mid-sip. Finishes with a slightly earthy, roasty bitterness and a hint of orangepeel. None of the elements in this beer's flavour are offensive, but they don't mesh very well at all, and the thin, flat, watery mouthfeel does not help matters one bit. There is a very slight hint of some carbonation, but for the most part this beer just feels limp.

Final Grade: 3.0, a C. Trafalgar has put out some decent seasonals over the past year or so, but Chocolate Orange Porter is not one of them, in my opinion. The strange mixture of conflicting flavours does have an unexplainable charm, but in the end they do not come together well - and the lame mouthfeel is the real dealbreaker here. This just isn't a satisfying porter to drink, and I really doubt I'd pay for another bottle - especially considering morbid curiosity was the only reason I bought this first one.
