375 mL caged-and-corked bottle from the LCBO; no best before date. I tried their Lanark Blueberry mead almost exactly a year ago today, and didn't mind it - so I figured I'd give another one of their fruit braggots a shot. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep, translucent cherry-red/blood-orange colour, producing a small cap of fizzy, pink-coloured head that crackles and pops as it evaporates almost instantaneously. The surface is left totally barren; no lace, cap or collar whatsoever. It pretty much looks like red Kool-Aid. On the nose I am getting a good amount of honey sweetness, in addition to notes of canned cranberry, grenadine and red Twizzlers. A touch boozy, as well, but that's to be expected.
Not exactly good, but not exactly awful, either. The honey sweetness on this one is reasonably mild and restrained, while a muddled mash-up of red berry flavours makes up the bulk of the profile. Cranberry is featured alongside notes of sweet cherries and grape juice, with a mild suggestion of jammy, raspberry tartness mid-sip. It finishes with some light tannic astringency, not unlike a rosé wine - the sweet/tart fruity flavours and ethanol warmth take a moment to fade from the palate, thereafter leaving a drying, cranberry skin vibe behind on the palate. Medium-bodied, with very gentle carbonation that weakly agitates the palate. While I wouldn't say that this braggot is impressing me all that much, it's still hard to stop myself from wanting to keep sipping it - so I can't be too harsh.
Final Grade: 3.09, a mediocre C+. Keeping in mind that I have tried only a handful of (non-Trafalgar) braggot/melomels in my day, I find their Muskoka Cranberry Mead to be a halfway decent product - though not as good as their blueberry, peach or baked apple braggots. Subjectively speaking, the flavour profile is approachable, and not too far off what I'd expect for something made with cranberry and honey - a bit too much 'red licorice' flavour for my tastes, but still easy enough to drink. I don't think I'd purchase this again, or recommend it all that highly - give it a shot if it tickles your fancy, but don't expect too much for your $5.50.
