Trafalgar has sourced local hop growers to produce this very special ale. Fresh hops are picked, rushed to the brewery and added to the beer all in the same day in a process called ‘wet hopping’. Freshly harvested hops impart much different flavour and aroma qualities to beer.

I've been passing this one up for a while, but given the terrible selections available at my local LCBO's I've finally caved.
A - Pours a hazy pale straw colour, loads of head with solid retention and chunky lacing.
S - Musty grassy hops, hint of citrus and peppery spice.
T - Mild grassy hops, reminiscent of a saaz type hop, mild citrus, hint of apple juice and an odd metallic flavour lingers.
M - Way too carbonated for my liking and comes across as a Belgian style brew given the body.
O - Certainly passed its prime, but surprisingly flavourful for a Trafalgar ale. Perhaps I'll give this one a try a bit sooner next time. By no means a hop bomb, but pleasureable nonetheless.

Not stunning, but the best Trafalgar offering I've tried in years.
A dark golden colour with a reddish tinge; very little head and no lacing. Aroma is of bready grains with a hint of hop resin. The flavour includes caramelized malts and ends with a pleasantly bitter hop finish.
Not the best pale ale on the market by any stretch, but miles ahead of other Trafalgar products! |

Bottle from the LCBO, 650ml into a pint glass. Label indicates "Hops picked and beer brewed on August 27, 2011, bottled September 20, 2011 and best before January 2012." I finally caved on a Trafalgar product.
Pours a light golden orange, with a finger or so of white head. Light retention and little lace. Nose has some orange and lightly cardboardy citrus. Grainy breads, and some dirty grass notes. Diacetyl. Taste has more grassy and old citrus notes, more of the grainy bread notes. Bitter pine in the finish. Weak and uninteresting profile all around. Medium carbonation, moderately bitter finish. Bomber was a waste of $6, could have spent my money much more wisely...

Bomber picked up at the LCBO; best before date January 2012.
Pours a hazy yellowish-gold colour, topped with a finger of soapy white head. It loses cohesion within a minute or two, but the fact that it has a significant head at all distinguishes it from most of the other Trafalgar brews I've had. A bit of lacing. The aroma is alright but nothing that enticing - citrusy hops, wet hay, butter and some light, grainy malts.
The hops are certainly in the forefront, as one might hope given the name... largely grapefruit citrus, with some earthy pine and hay notes as well. Some grainy malts in the background with a bit of honey. The buttery diacetyl notes are a little strong for my liking but they tend to complement the hoppy flavour rather than detract, in my opinion. Some earthy bitterness lingers in the finish for a few seconds, drying the palate. A little slippery in the mouth. Pretty thin-bodied, with fairly light carbonation.
Definitely one of Trafalgar's stronger efforts, but even if I were to limit my selection to only Ontario craft brewers, I can think of several APAs that I would prefer over this... and they're probably cheaper too. Enjoyable, but not especially so... I'll put this one in the 'worth a try' category, but it's nothing to go out of your way for.

Appearance: It has a nice yellow/golden colour to it. It has a nice white head that dies down quite fast and has some lacing.
Smell: The aromas give out hints of floral hops with some grainy malts and a bit of caramel and cirtrusy notes.
Taste: Like the aromas, it has a grainy malt character with slight caramely notes and some floral, grassy and citrusy hops.
Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a light balance of malts and hops.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavours and aromas. Not a suprise coming from Trafalgar.

Nice notes on the bottle. Details when the hops were picked, when the beer was brewed and when it was bottled in addition to a best before date of January 2012. Bottled 13 days ago.

Familiar smell from this brewery. Old, wet grains, earth and honey. Some grapefruit and buttery hop traits with a slight strawberry tone.
Subtle grapefruit, caramel malts and a strong grainy tone. Very earthy and grassy. Nice bitter finish with a grape or white wine note.
Thin mouthfeel with a dry, grainy and earthy character on the tongue. Little to no carbonation, very dry aftertaste.
Decent, drinkable effort from Trafalgar, but still can't escape the musty grain and dilactyl characteristics that frequently ruin their beers. It works somewhat with this style, but there are countless alternatives that are better and cheaper.
