Draught @ Times Square location: this one pours a clear amber color. There was about 1 finger of an off white head that left a bit of lacing. It has a pretty good nose. A fair amount of citrus/grapefruit hops are on top. Sweet malts in the background. Definitely a hoppy bite to the tatste. The malt sweetness is fairly well masked. Decent body to it. Not bad!

On tap at the Empire State Building location. Light golden colour with a bubbly off-white head that leaves lace. Citrus hoppy taste was fine. Average mouthfeel. Was not getting much in complex taste. Orange aroma. Not bad for this bretwpub by comparison.

On tap. It came with a deep copper color and nice tan head. The aroma was light. What I could smell was fruity-maltiness with a hint of spice presumably from the yeast. The flavor seemed a little light for a true Barleywine. There was sweet caramel maltiness that gave way to a little plum and date type fruit flavor. Nice light weight beer for the style.

The barleywine was heartlands best offer.

Deep amber tones with a nice stable head that leaves a generous lacing.
Smell is of roasted malts and seems citrusy. Taste is strong, sweet beginning with a woody flavour then a strong and lasting rush of hops, very bitter but manageable.

In the end this beer is worth the visit to the pub at union sq.

Ok color, with not a lot of head or lace. The retention isn't great either. The aroma and taste are identical and not very impressive. It has a very nice malty backbone though. The mouthfeel is nice. Overall it's an ok beer but still a mid range barleywine on it's good day.

Pours clear golden - very light in color for a barlewine - with a thin head that immediately becomes a wiap, with a little stickage. Very clear.

The smell is rummish - fruity alcohol esters and sweet grain.

The taste is grainy and sweet - rum and fruitiness. Very different than any barleywine I've had. While different is sometimes good - I don't know about this case. It seemed to lack the complexities and richness of the style. Watery thin finish with some residual sweetness, without lingering flavor. Body seemed a bit weak, though alcohol was well-covered - well, in sharpness more than in taste.

It has a surprising drinkability to it considering its abv and lack of anything particularly interesting. Something odd about it though that I didn't find so appealing, and rather thin.

This barleywine had a somewhat strange nose, flowery with a bit of a sting, kind of like carnations meets Icy-Hot. The beer had a nice pronounced cloudy orange color and was virtually headless\uncarbonated. Fruity flavor and malty goodness, with a tiny clove (?) bite and alcohol sweet finish. Overall a good barleywine, a pleaseant surprise from Heartland. I wouldn't mind having a chance to try this from a cask...

Arrived to the table with a sheet of lacing acrosss the top of the pint, lovely golden/orange color. The nose was fruity, with a nice citrus not behind the fruit and malt tones. Some flowery hoppiness there too. The taste was full bodied with a relaxed carbonation, allowing the sweet maltiness to dominate. Alcohol and flowery hoppiness follows. The finish was as warming as it was long...just very very good!
