Stopped in to a Heartland Brewery for lunch and was pleased to see this on their seasonal menu. I was surprised this isn't already on BA.
Poured from a tap into a standard pint glass. Arrived as a dark amber-orange with a white head that left some lacing on the glass.
Smelled sweet and pumpkiny. Its nice. No spices come through, nor does any alcohol despite the high abv. It's pretty good.
In the taste, I get the pumpkin, but I wish this had more spice flavors. It's a little overly sweet and almost syrupy. That said, it's a nice flavor, and compares favorably against this season's selection of pumpkin ales.
The high abv gives this a nice warmth that enhances the flavor. It's almost like a good port in that respect. The beer has decent, but not spectacular body. The warmth gives this a half-point bump.
I am scoring this as a 3 overall, which seems odd given that I rated everything else a 3.5, but it's because the individual components are good, but the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. It's just too sweet. It isn't bad though, and I can't in good conscience recommend not trying this beer.
