While planning our latest collaboration with our pals from Humble Sea Brewing in Santa Cruz, we wanted to brew a style that neither of us have made before; a Black Pilsner. We brewed a crispy pilsner base, with just a hint of dark malt to add a layer of silkiness and a deep color to disguise this crispy and crushable lager. Our team had a blast brewing this Pink Floyd inspired lager with our new friends, and we hope that it will leave you Comfortably Numb.

16oz canned on 11/30/21, opened 1-30-22.
1 finger beige head, good retention and holds at a solid cap. Very dark, almost all black...some dark brown at the edges. Sheet of lacing on the far side of the glass. Roasted malt, an almost smoky char, and some coffee notes in the aroma. Dark roast, bitter chocolate, roasty char, rich flavors. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, low-medium carbonation in a lightly sweet finish. Very Good to Outstanding.

Deep, dark brown body, clear yet the beer appears black in the glass; dense and thick head, spongy and creamy texture. Excellent aroma combining cocoa and roasted grain with a suggestion of coffee. Fine flavor, chocolate with mild sweetness; mild grain char; moderate bitterness; a bit acrid at the finish. Medium body; silky smoothness undercut with a mild prickliness at the finish; predominantly sweet mouthfeel with the residual sugar presence.

Generally a very nice dark lager, a pilsner per the brewery's description, the beer brings some dark beer richness and lager smoothness to the palate. The sweet flavor is very nice although there is a somewhat harsh bitterness towards the finish. Still, a nice beer overall.

Pouring temperature: 47 °F; canning data: CANNED 11/30/21
