473 mL can from the LCBO, one of four brews in Amsterdam's Winter Flight mixed pack. Coded K1821 (Oct 18 2021) and served slightly chilled.

Pours a crystal clear straw yellow colour, generating nearly a finger of loose, soapy white head that falls apart within two minutes or so. A frothy collar of suds remains, surrounding a thin, patchy cap; plenty of webby lace, too. Looks great, but the nose is very subtle and rather plain - hints of grainy pale malts and crackery sweetness, with even fainter suggestions of grassy, weakly earthy hops.

It's a good pils with no surprises - grainy pale pilsner malts at the forefront, followed by hints of bready sweetness and noble hops later on - grassy, earthy, and somewhat herbal. Moderately bitter finish with lingering suggestions of earthy, herbal hops and grassiness. Light in body, with pointed carbonation that lends a firm bite to this brew's smooth, crisp mouthfeel. I could easily drink a few of these in a row with no complaints whatsoever.

Final Grade: 3.67, a B grade. Pure Pilsner is a serviceable, robustly hopped Euro-style lager, on par with some of the middling German exported pilsners. I think I'd take this over practically any of Amsterdam's other year-round lagers, e.g. 3 Speed or their flagship Blonde - but if you don't particularly enjoy noble hops, then I'd expect you might disagree. It's not something I'd search high and low for, but if you enjoy German lagers and are looking for a domestic alternative, this is worth taking a flyer on.

Pure gold colour with a loose white head. Grainy and corny on the smell and metallic on the taste. Taste is good when ice cold, but as it warms, the taste goes downhill.

473 ml can served cold into a beer mug. LCBO purchase for $3.25 CDN.

Appearance - clear golden brew with lots of bubbles and a finger and a half of white head. Minimal spotty lacing. Modest head retention.

Smell- grassy notes with hints of bread. Decent nose. Slightly skunked?

Taste- earthy green flavour with slight bready bites. Fairly bitter for a pils.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, reasonably light and crisp with modest carbonation.

Overall- decent pils with good crisp carbonation. Lacking the depth of some of the other recent pils but for a clean no frills pils it’s pretty good.
