Tindved is a sour Norwegian ale brewed with Norwegian malted barley and raw wheat. We added juice from pressed sea buckthorn to obtain the brash sourness. Nøgne Ø ales are unfiltered and unpasteurized so pour carefully if you want to leave the natural yeast in the bottom of the bottle.

Aroma is funky/sour fruit, malts and a hint of vinegar/lactic acid. The flavor is funky fruit, malts mild lactic acid and a mix of slightly spicy and sour/tart in the finish.

2012 vintage. Really fruity with tart peach, currant and (I guess I'm tasting) buckthorn. Beautiful mouth feel, drinks amazingly!

250ml bottle, an apparent leftover from last year's Craft Advent beer calendar in British Columbia, the denizens of which apparently can't perform a simple text search.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden amber colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and certainly fizzy off-white head, which leaves some decent sudsy tributary pattern lace around the glass as it quickly disappears.

It smells of fairly sour and sweet fleshy fruit - kind of peach or apricot-like, but then I wouldn't know a sea buck-thorn if it bit me on the ass - with some innocuous grainy pale malt, a further yeasty funkiness, and a touch of leafy, earthy hops. The taste is more moderately sour and musty fleshy fruit, a weird vegetal character, gritty pale malt, Pez candies, weakened yeast, and some still soft earthy, weedy hops.

The bubbles are still fairly active in their swirling frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and more or less smooth, neither the hops nor alcohol (not to mention the yeast) bothering to muck about here. It finishes off-dry, the alien fruitiness tangling with the lingering yeast and benign malt.

Very much in the same vein as the HaandBryggeriet brew of the same ilk from a year or so ago - beginner-level sour, but that's not the story here. It's the fruit, dummy, and all it can do for you!

Tindved from Nøgne Ø out of Norway. Being Norwegian by heritage I'm excited to try this beer. It poured a copperish hue with a thin head that dissipated fairly quickly. The nose reminded me of citrus fruit but specifically, oranges that weren't quite ready to eat. You can get the tartness on the nose right away as well. Other than that I couldn't get much. Wasn't sure what to expect as I'm not usually a fan of tart beers, ie. Lambics. It was actually kind of fruity sweet right off the bat but quickly fades leaving that sourness at the back of the tongue which also disappears quickly. It almost had a cough syrup bitterness, almost like Buckleys. Now I've never had Buckthorn fruit (Tindved) but from what I read it used through the world for medicinal purposes so that might actually make sense. It had a carbonation that disappear quickly in the mouth. Wasn't sure what to expect. Admittedly my first sip I was wasn't sure I was going to like it, but found each corresponding sip got bigger and I really enjoyed this.

Would enjoy this one more in summertime. Refreshing, juniper flavours, surprisingly smooth.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 8.5 oz bottle into a Floridaweisse Berliner Bash snifter.

A: Gold, and mildly hazy, with a one-finger white head that fades fairly quickly. Modest visible carbonation.

S: Tart citrus and pulpy fruit, lactic acidic tartness, some horse blanket funk. It smells dry but fruity.

T: Lactic tartness, fruity sweet (I suppose that's the sea buckthorn?) and acidic. Some barnyard funk, old socks, and musty hay – but this aspect isn't overdone. Very dry finish.

M: Light bubbly champagne-like mouthfeel, great carbonation sensation, minimal alcohol presence if any.

O: I thought this was pretty enjoyable. I have no idea what a sea buckthorn is or how it tastes, or how natural this seems, but it doesn't come across as artificial. Tasty and drinkable though fairly acidic. The funk seems nicely integrated.
