16oz can from The Grapevine. Pale golden pour, thin but persistent white foamy head. Grainy, biscuity aroma. Taste mirrors the nose, with a little bit of bitterness at the back, sweet.

I first heard about this beer from an acquaintance while working on a project. I was excited to learn Idaho Brewing did something special to commemorate U.S.S. Idaho. When I was home that weekend, I went down to the Idaho Brewing to get a can; alas, Spud Brew sold out shortly after releasing, and I was bummed out. Fast forward two months, I was attending the Beer Fest they have in Idaho, and I saw the tent where submarine vets were and, right on the table was the famed Spud Brew; needless to say, that was the first beer I sipped on. I still wanted to review this beer, but it was elusive.
I spotted Spud Brew at the beer store yesterday and immediately purchased it. Finally, I am reviewing this beer. I served it in a pint glass at 42 degrees. The pour created an airy, creamy, two-fingered, bright white head with above-average retention. The slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. The beer's color is pale straw yellow with light golden hues, charting at S.R.M. 3, and is brilliantly clear. The appearance of the beer is a beautiful pale ale.
Nosing the glass, I smell floral blossoms, orange peels, grapefruit, herbal crackers, lightly toasted malts, biscuits, and earthy. The hop aromas are intense but quite like a standard I.P.A., a little less fragrant than an SNPA. I am delighted to get this aroma for a five percent beer without overdoing it.
Spud Brew presents a delightful balance of hops and malt, neither overpowering the other. While not as intense as I expected, the hop flavors offer a pleasant mix of tropical, floral, herbal, and earthy notes. The malt profile, on the other hand, is doughy, biscuity, and mildly sweet. The beer also features yeasty and light phenolic notes, adding complexity.
The mouthfeel is carbonated and finishes crisp. The body
The one disappointing aspect of beer is that the hop aromas do not translate into the flavors. I expected this hop punch, but it has mellowed out a bit. I know they recently brewed a new batch of this Limited beer, which has not sat on the shelves for a long time. The malt backbone is lovely and could handle more hops. This tasty pale ale tasted the same as when I first sampled it in May.
