2012 vintage, drank about 14-15 months after production.

The nose is primarily red licorice nibs. It was hard to get past that once I picked it up, but it was delicious in its own right. The sweet malts and red fruit are all over while the hops have taken the bench.

The taste is more balanced between this sweet red fruit / red licorice quality and a grassy hops character. Some barrel character as well. I really like how this developed in a pretty short period of time.

650ml red waxed 2012 bomber poured into tulip 4/9/13

A clear brownish amber with a shitload of tiny bubbles moving some sediment around, two fingers of tan foam falls to a pinky's width and stays there for a while leaving a couple partial rings followed by random patches

S loads of vanilla and hard toffee, burnt brown sugar, some wood and bruised dark fruit, faint citrus, nutty notes, and a little booze

T not far off the nose, more booze, more wood but not a whole lot of bourbon, nutty notes I could smell are focused on hazelnut, the nose has an edge but I'm not complaining about the flavor

M silky and creamy, some heat and tannins, woody notes and nutty toffee linger on the finish

O pretty solid but could use some age, good value and If I had the chance I'd buy one to sit on

good attempt at a BW for a first try, something I'd drink again and one of the better Granville's I've had recently

Red waxed 2012 bottle. Bourbon barrel aged.

Appearance. Pours a deep reddish brown with a half finger of off-white head.

Smell. Woody bourbon and vanilla, caramel, piney and woody hops, a little citrus and some grainy malts.

Taste. Big sweet caramel, plums and raisins, some piney hops giving a bit of bitterness in the finish, brown sugar bitter wood, bourbon, vanilla and maybe a little bit of smoke.

Mouthfeel. Full body, a little sticky, medium-low carbonation.

Overall. A decent barleywine with lots of wood and not a ton of bourbon. Interesting and would probably be great with some time on it to mellow the piney hops a bit.
