Appearance: Muddy copper brown. A good looking 1.5 finger head that is a creamy and foamy ivory; tight medium -sized bubbles, dissipates pretty quickly with a slight ring but does leave an ok lace on the glass and some nice surface soap foam at the start but disappears to near nothingness somewhere in the first quarter of the glass .
Aromatics: Lots of sweet and dark fruit - plum/date, cherry, molasses and brown sugar that all nicely mingle with a touch of warm yeast and some nutty scents.
Taste: Starts a bit tangy and works into a fairly robust earthy roasted grass/wheat mixed with an ever so subtle sweet red licorice flavour. There is a slight alcohol tip at the end but tapers off so gently you barely notice it.
Mouth: Kind of watery, the carbonation does very little on the palate in terms of activity. It is a fairly flat light-medium body with just a bit of crispness that seems to creep into every other sip .
Overall: By looking at the rather straight-foreward-ness of the qualities I have picked out of this beer - I’d say it is fairly standard, though the colour and mouthfeel do leave a little more to be desired the taste and aroma are quite quaint and enjoyable.
Pairing: Longwood suggests any “West Coast seafood… especially Tuna,” I’d take that a step further and say a good seared Tuna steak with a teriyaki style glaze and a side of freshly steamed green beans with butter and garlic. Or if you don’t have that kind of time - a few slices of a dry spicy Chorizo sausage with marble cheese on Vegetable Thin crackers could also work quite nicely.
