Had this on tap at Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Fest and out of the bottle. Review is from on tap.

Pours a fizzy tan head. Color is an orange hued brown.

Aroma: Cherries, oak, sour flavors and some spice. This is a very solid smelling Flanders.

Taste: Sour and funky. Tart cherries, earthy funk, oak, vanilla and spices. This is very solid.

Mouthfeel: Sour and tart. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry and sour.

Overall, this is an amazing Flanders red. Very drinkable and the flavors that should be seen in the style. A good amount of sour/tartness as well. I am very impressed.

Thanks to my dad for picking this one up.

A - Pours a beautiful deep amber with a bit of garnet, and one and a half fingers of light tan head. Head settles pretty quickly, but leaves some nice lacing.

S - A nice fruity tartness, mostly sour cherries, not very vinegary, with a decent earthy funk component as well. Oak is also noticeable in the aroma.

T - Very tart initially, with a big sour cherry presence and very faint lemon, with malts balancing things out in the middle and bringing in a bit of sweetness. The finish is quite oaky and earthy.

M - Medium mouthfeel has a slight sweetness in the middle, but finishes tart, earthy and dry.

O - Nice Flanders Red, if a bit too sweet to be great. i'd still have this again, especially from a small local brewery.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a Captain Lawrence snifter. Shared with schen9303.

A: Standard pour yields a massive, thick, 4 finger cream colored head with amazing retention. Beer is a semi-clear reddish-clay. Lacing is thick and patchy but sparse and with moderate cling. Head retention is really amazing on this one.

S: Nose is sweet cherry, vinegar, some straw notes, and spicy yeast. Exceedingly aromatic and enticing.

T: Opens slightly metallic. Sour cherries, raspberries, and other tart red fruit. Some funky notes towards the middle with some cobweb, wet hay, and straw. Yeasty bitterness lingers in the back. End is slightly vinegary and strongly acidic with a tart finish and a sticky sweet and tart red fruit aftertaste. Except for the metallic part in the beginning, very solid.

M: Light to medium bodied and highly carbonated. Lively and a bit puckering in the mouth but strangely smooth. Filmy and smooth going down. Finish is slightly messy with a sticky aftertaste. Standard.

O: I'm rather impressed by this beer that I've never heard of before. Definitely under the radar and worth giving a shot if you ever come upon it.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber body. Hazy. Big khaki head. Thick collar.

Smell - A little oxidized. Caramel malt. Smells bretty, which is odd. Vinegar acidity.

Taste - Caramel malt. Less sour than the nose made me think it would be. Some vinegary sourness, but more brett. A little bit of oxidation in the back end.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation. Dry. Medium sourness.

Overall - Too old. Some decent flavors back there, though.

This was an extra courtesy of ThomasHardy from our in person trade at the FFF XV party.

Served in tulips and shared with my wife and her brother mike who I've turned into a BA a long tine ago (his user name is godin64bit).

Purplish red body with a tan head. Nice looking beer with spotty chunks of lacing left behind.

Smells of sour cherries, some oak, and some malts.

The flavor hits the same notes as the nose, but in reverse order-- starts with sweet malt, then sour cherries with a nice dry acidic tartness.

Slightly overcarbonated, but otherwise nice. Just a touch thin.

Overall, this is surprisingly good... Not world class, and no where as good as Rodenbach, but not a bad beer-- especially coming from such a small place.

The pour is red in color with a fizzy off-white head. A nice aroma to this one. I get some hints of cherry as well as mild vinegar to with some slight funk of straw, grass, and oak. A touch of fruit, too. The flavor has a little raspberry and strawberry along with some sweet malt. A moderate tartness with only a touch of vinegar. Medium bodied with high carbonation.

A: Reddish brown with a small white head.

S: Vinegar and bready malt with a little dark fruit that reminds me of plum and black cherry. There's a touch of vanilla.

T: Plum and currant with a light acetic acidity. I get vinegar and a little vanilla. The finish is tart and dry.

M: Medium body with a nice upper medium carbonation level.

Overall: A pretty good Flanders Red.

Big Rock Red Rock Flanders Red pours a dark dried blood red with brown spots. Some soapy textured small cap up top leaving some sticks. Smell is a mix of vinegar and certain fruit currant, plum, tart apple. Taste is mouth puckering with some plum and apple, a dash of cherry. Vinegar takes a backseat to a nice currant taste, kinda like consecration. Oak and some faint smooth vanilla. Feel is quite accidic, battery acid like yet tart and quite puckering. Medium bodied with bubbles. A great take on the style.

Appearance: Pours a murky cranberry/rust color with a few inches of foam (foam slowly gushed out of the bottle, as well); streaky lacing, too

Smell: Tartness abounds, with sour cherry, red wine vinegar and quite a bit of oak

Taste: Tart cherries drenched in vinegar at the opening, with oak and a hint of vanilla developing by mid-palate; some earthy depth, after the swallow, accompanied by a fruity element that complements the tartness

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A great example of the style; I chilled it down to deal with the expected gushing; at first the tartness was overwhelming but as it warmed the fruit came into balance

Bottle courtesy of iceicebaby. Bomber poured into a Duvel Green tulip, dark purplish amber color with a creamy tan head. Aromas of brown sugar with a tart cherry pie note and some oak. Flavor is spicy with light cider/vinegar, brown sugar and a lightly solventy finish that's partially hidden by the acidity but still evident. A little fizzy but this is better than many of the Belgian examples of the style.

Sampled December 2009
This is a bit of a gusher, but only slowly such that I was never in danger of losing beer. A careful pour results in an almost four finger thick, tan colored head in my 25cl tulip glass. The beer is a dark red color that shows a lightly hazed, red-gold color when held up to the light. The aroma smells like oak, toasted / caramelized malt, a musty woodiness, a touch of fruitiness (raisin, maybe a hint of cherry and currants), woody black pepper, cinnamon bark that is heavy on the bark. If you really dig around here for a focused period of time a toasty, whole grain note and some plank-like woodiness comes to dominate the nose. As the beer warms up a touch of overly ripe, farmhouse cheese character becomes noticeable.

My first sip is nicely tart, quite fruity (more like currants and a fruity-red wine than I was expecting) and there is a solid back drop of oak that provides a light astringency and spiciness to play the balancing role to the first two flavors. The beer has quite a bit of oak character, and with the fruitiness, really reminds me in many ways of a tannic, though fruity red-wine. The sourness here is definitely lactic more than anything, in fact I can't really taste a noticeable amount of acetic acid. Other, secondary flavors of leather, dates and a touch of mustiness. The ample carbonation provides lots of fizz, but somehow this beer does not come off as being overly carbonated. This has a lightness and a quaffibility, but still is note too light. There is just enough soft sweetness here (some of this seems just percieved from the sourness some how) to accentuate the nice fruitiness and a caramelized, slightly savory, maltines that comes towards the middle end and finish of each sip. There is a peppery oak note here that is almost more nasal than oral, but is still noticeable in the flavor a bit.

This is an exceedingly easy 22oz bottle to finish. It is perhaps not the most complex version of the style, and it is a bit heavy on the oak when compared to most of the old-world examples (but still not over-whelmingly so), and I wish the malt character was a bit more substantial, but damn is this a tasty beer. Actually the main component that keeps this from being world class is the lack of malt character; much of it has been fermented away as a rich caramelized malt character is definitely missing. On the up side this has an interesting fruitiness (and with the oak really evokes thoughts fo a fruity oaky red wine) that is a result of the dry finishing fermentation.

This one is quite the gusher. I ever so slightly crack the cap when foam goes spraying across the room. A quick juant to my glass and the chaos is over...

Pours a hazy rust with a silky tan head that leaves a light lace.

Nose has ripe plums and cherries, red wine, mossy oak and barnyard funk.

Taste starts off with tart pitted fruits, funky yeast, wood, sweet malts wine grapes.

Medium body has a crisp carbonation. Nice dry and acidic finish.

Bomber into a Weyerbacher tulip. Thanks to Chris for sharing this obscure beer.

A: Gusher. Once it settles enough to pour it yields a clear chestnut body with a thin, coarse tan head that settles into a ring. Pretty nice.

S: Bright, intense sour nose brims with vinegar, cherries, vanilla, and cranberries. Excellent.

T: Opens with cherry and vanilla, followed by dry tartness, cranberry astringency, and tannins. Very dry, very astringent, and yet quite tasty.

M: Smooth medium body with modest carbonation.

D: Clean, dry, and unfortunately harsh.

Notes: This one was interesting. Amazing, authentic sweet/sour aroma (emphasis on the sour, gladly), and yet too much bitter astringency on the palate. That said, I'd rather have a Flanders Red challenge me with sharp tannins and bitter fruit than just drown everything in syrupy sweetness.

A - Poured a cloudy, muddy reddish brown, copper-tinged liquid with a billowy cap of beige bubbles that retained quite well, leaving some patchy lace around the glass.

S - Initial aroma blends sour fruit, oaky tannins, Sweet Tarts candy and a hint of band-aid to create a tart yet slightly sweet aroma with an underlying sour presence.

T - Dry and oaky yet tart and fruity, this Flanders Red is wildly complex and quite tasty to boot! There is a hint of sweetness in the backend that helps keep the band-aid funk from becoming too prominent. I also get a slight sense of Brett, although just a tinge, which adds to the beer's complexity.

M - Medium bodied with a bristly mouthfeel and an intensely dry, tart finish although not overbearingly sour or harsh at all.

D - Tart, sweet and fruity with a pleasant oaky character, this is a fairly complex Flanders Red that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Good stuff!
