Usquebae (Gaellic for "Water for Life") is an interesting rendition for the English Barleywine... which I always had associated with points south of Scotland. But BA wisely recognized the stronger cask ales are appearing north of Hadrians Wall has re-stylized as a British Ale.) Hence, my choice.
Usquebae Looks like a barley wine also, lighter. It Smells like one also, albeit more vanilla and honey notes. Tastes are true and the barrels (3 months aging) seem to have had whiskey in them adding to a warm, friendly finish. Soft in the mouth. And ABV is well-concealed. I wish I had more.
Strathaven seems to be young ... but has come a long way in producing such a complex ale. They have a modest lineup of perhaps six beers and then produce really special stuff like this. (That seems to be a successful model for Scottish micros.) Add it up and Strathaven deserves some big OA Hugs.
