Brasserie de Silly S.A.

 

Abbaye de Cambron and actually Silly Super 64, Brasserie de Silly. The bottle I had was just two years after the deadline.
The color of this beer is light amber, clear.
Foam white, small, very quickly disappears.
The aroma is reminiscent of white wine and unripe white grapes, then the stables, cheese type camember.
The taste is slightly sour, slightly dry, there gooseberry and like the smell of white wine and a little stable.
Only a slight bitterness and in the finish.
Beer saturation high, evocative of sparkling wines, here adequate.
Alcohol is not perceptible.
Very light beer, "lean", strongly evocative of champagne, lightly nor acid, slightly dry. It suits me, although I suspect the beer a little lost of its original flavor - two years had taken their toll.

 

 

 

 

 

Pours a tiny bit hazy orange, one finger foamy head for a few minutes, sticky lace.
Smell of faint fruit, mostly malts, grains and faint spices.
Light fruitiness in the start, with some yellow apples and pears, mixed in with some grainy malts, but a tad too sweet. Some hints of honey, Belgian sugars dominate though. Finishes with some low spiciness and a mild bitterness.
Medium body, chewy, low carbonation. Aftertaste isn't that great, muddled with some stale malts and yeasts.
Decent, but far from the others that Brasserie de Silly offers.

Pour is a transparent gold with a thin skummy white head. The nose has candied sugars, note of lemon and a touch of zesty spice. The taste is watery in comparison and less balanced. Caramel malts and toasted grains are up front with light citrus hop and some residual sugars. Body is light and a bit thin, low carbonation creates an oily wet finish.

Pours a clean orange-ish to yellow color with an off white head. In the aroma, caramel and malty. In the taste, gingerbread like malt with a touch of malt. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry caramel presence in the aftertaste. Kind of like drinking a gingerbread cokie with caramel on it.

Very surprising beer. Amazingly bittersweet with medium body and round and maltiness. Kind of an unsettling combination. To me, some of its problems might come from infusing so much flavor into such a light body. Not so drinkable at all. There might be a kind of acidic quality that puts it over the top, I'm not really sure. That acidity might just be the bitterness alongside the light body.

I think this beer would be best enjoyed on a very hot day. Then some of those otherwise bitter-effervescent notes might take a turn for the refreshing. But on a cold day at Pizzeria Paradiso, it just slightly rubbed me the wrong way.

Small brown 250ml bottle, labelled as an 'amber bier', best before 27 June 2010, drank and reviewed 27 March 2010. Poured into a 'La Chouffe' stemmed tulip glass.

The beer is amber, clear bodied and good looking, a huge white head of bubbles sat on top.

Yeast, hops and lightly tosted malts combine to give this beer a fairly sweet, flowery smell.

A liitle too sweet in the tastebuds for me, a little too watery as well. This is one of the strangest Belgian beers I've had, and a long way from the best.

An amber orange beer with a thick creamy head.

Smell is malty with biscuity caramel malt notes. Some smokey notes and spent grains, which is actually quite pleasant. Some hints of yeast and after sometime I know there is diacetyl in the smell, which adds a nice buttery creaminess to the beer.

Taste is light bitter with a nice biscuity malt base that is a bit smokey. The diacetyl that I smelled is also present in the taste. It adds a great sublayer of flavor to the otherwise one-dimensional beer and makes the mouthfeel smooth and creamy.

My adventure into lesser known Belgians continues. I found this at Smokeless Joe's, a recent addition. A good head and attractive peacht amberness. Nice yeasty fruity aroma. Our waitress thought it was metallic, like iron. There was an odd taste, if metallic it would be aluminum. Thinnish mouthfeel.

Blonde amber color, quite scarce foam, but sticky.
In the smell a clear fruitiness, with peach, overall, then orange, honey, and something tropical.
The taste is on the sweetie side, with cane sugar. Expecting something more round.
Light body.
In the aftertaste, light, again peach an sugary sweetness.
