While the twenty-plus members of the Belgian Family Brewers Assn tend to have very good stories stretching over many generations and two world wars and often three revolutions, Silly has one of the better stories I've heard on this Podge's tour of BFBA members. Silly piques further my "sociological" interest in family brewers.
Silly's production is a centuries-old facility. But happily, we visited in the middle of a major renovation. Inheriting a traditional brewery very much in need of update, its fifth generation owner was quick to point out what a labor of love both the renovation and the brewery's financial health was. Named for the nearby River, Silly is among the last remaining farmhouse breweries in the Hainaut province. One explanation is that in WWI, the Germans closed them all except Silly as show to the Wallonians that they were "honourable" occupiers.
The Silly brewery tour was the best I'd had in 10 years mostly because it was uplifting to see such dedication to carrying on with fables and foibles of one's ancestors.
Like many small brewers, Silly's quality and consistency can vary... but Silly's seems to be improving that while also innovating styles. I've had several of their brews and bought their eight pack sampler from the tasting room. Service was the best; getting a tour from the owner is the tops. For a smaller family brewer, Silly has a good range from its famous Wee Heavy to several saisons to, recently, a Lo-No brew.
