Look: Semi-clear ruby red with a silky-looking and quick-forming off-white head that slowly recedes, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Warm brown bread, toffee, earthiness, fruity esters, and toasted grain notes
Taste: Follows nose well. Lots of toasted grains and bready notes along with rich layers of toffee get things going before waves of fruity and earthy notes creep in and join. More bready malt, toffee, and earthiness come to the forefront and lead to the finish
Mouthfeel: Full, fairly smooth and clean throughout, medium-high carbonation, and a soft finish with zero dryness
Overall: I dig it. Another winner and a tasty red ale from these fine folks. Great toasted and bready malt notes tow the line with a good hoppy backbone that leans very old school in flavor/aroma. Full and smooth mouthfeel is a bonus too and makes this very easy to quaff

Couple of pints at Game Over arcade in Lincoln City OR $4.50 Typical darker amber colour with a small tan head. Malty aromas..caramel and toffee. Malt forward amber ale here..although there is a wee bit of the floral hop going on in the end. Mouth feel was pretty nice. Smooth drinker. A good malty amber for drinking not thinking.

A- Poured ruby red with a soapy off-white head that left some splashy lace

S- Some juicy fruit and sweet toffee in the aroma pretty sweet aroma, decent aroma

T- Some big toffee notes, sweet malt character, and a pretty big astringent hop finish with citrusy and earthy flavors. Lots of lingering hop flavor and bitterness

M- Smooth, lots of prickly carbonation, finishes dry

O- This beer has a lot of bold malt and hop character. I would not say it is really balanced but both the malt and hops do shine. Very drinkable

 

Clear copper colour with a small, thin, light tan head. Fair head retention.

Mild nutty malt aroma with thin hop character. Nothing special.

Balanced caramelised malts with a touch of minerally toasted malt.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A middle of the road amber ale. Easy enough to drink but what is with all of these fairly ordinary beers.

Dark copper, okay not really that red, I dunno. Sometimes i think its funny when people review and write 'reddish'. I think sometimes it's just because its labled under the red ale style, despite not actually being 'reddish' colored.

Good rich caramel malt and almost a nutty aroma. Hops in there are spicy and herbal.

Flavor is similar. Big taste. Caramel, toffee, and big hops. The general bitterness makes the mouthfeel shorter and lighter then its potential.

Overall my second favorite of Steelheads lineup, behind the IPA.

I enjoyed a couple of pints of this beer during my most recent visit to the Steelhead.

As with all their beers, it is served in standard shaker pint. The beer is a dark red with an off-white head and nice lacing.

I like the aroma; it is caramel, nutty with a bit of citrus.

This is a solid slightly hopped-up red. The beer walks the line between sweet and bitter. Nice caramel and apple tastes all backed by some citrus notes.

The mouth has a nice low level of carbonation and lands on the hefty side of medium. Easy session beer that pairs well with food (BBQ chicken pizza in my case). Well done!

I had this on tap at the Steelhead Brew Co, Eugene, OR. Also - this is mis-classified as a Scottish Ale - it should be classified as a Red. This is Steelhead's best seller and one of their many medal winners. It's served as a deep red-brown color with no head. It's somewhat bubbly, but not too much. The smell is mainly of toffee or caramel malt, but it is faint. There's some lacing on the glass, but not much. It has a good complex flavor in the hops with a slight malt aftertaste. Good stuff!

11/08/04- Sampled at the Steelhead Brewery in Burlingame, CA

Appearance- Decent head with nice lacing. Pours and amber red color.

Smell- Sweet smell with hops, malt and a roasted nutty scent.

Taste- Nice mixture of malt and hops. Very dry finish, but crisp a the same time. Lots of nutty and carmel tastes.

Mouthfeel- Great carbonation in this one. Not to harsh on the tongue.

Drinkability- One of the better red ales I have had so far. Nice beer from Steelhead.

Served on tap at the Burlingame, CA location in a pint glass. Dark red color with a lacy foma head that thinned rather quickly ro one small island. The beer had really no aroma which definatley hurts its ratings. Perhaps the bartender served it too cold. But alas, it is their beer and their jobt o present it as they wish.

The flavor is aroasty and malt with a sweet strawberry, honey, and astringent flavor. The tecture is thin without much satifying coating of the palate.

Raging Rhino Red would at first blush appear to be a red ale. Certainly the name suggests as much. But it won a GABF gold medal in 1991 as a Scottish ale. Frankly, the distinction between styles is often a matter of semantics, preference and marketing initiatives. Having savored a pint, I feel no compelling need to split hairs on the matter. It is what it is. And it’s pretty good.

Raging Rhino has an abundance of flavor and a distinctive taste. At first I was at a loss to define that taste. But that same taste recurred in two other Steelhead beers and I now believe it is derived primarily from the house yeast strain. This flavor works quite well here, less so on Steelhead’s blonde and brown ales.

Rhino’s aroma is yeasty and concise. It offers minimal head, lace, or carbonation. This is a clear dark bronze brew with flashes of intense ruby when held to the light. Its distinctive taste may originate from its yeasty character. But the flavor is built upon a broad malt platform that is neither sweet nor roasty. The malts are somehow green and raw. This is good, especially with its contours rounded by bitterness. The total effect is peaty and reminiscent of good brown earth.
