1L plastic bottle with screw-top cap poured in a pint glass. Label has Mano's symbol, a picture of a bald eagle, and states "Canadian WILD Life Beer".
Clear and a pale straw yellow. Not really the colour I'd expect to find from a Pale Ale. Has me a little worried that it's really a lager in disguise, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. White head is 1/4 inch at the pour with lots of big bubbles. Settles down to 1/8 inch and leaves nice sheets of lace.
Aroma is pretty mild, and a bit like a pilsener. Grains and piney hops. This is leading me more towards a lager or pilsener instead of a pale ale.
Taste really took me by surprise. Strongly of hops and very bitter. There really isn't any sweetness or malt flavour. A bit of grapefruit at the swallow with a bitter astringent aftertaste. Tastes more like a Bitters than a Pale Ale, but maybe this is what they mean since they also have a beer that they call a Dark Pale Ale.
Mouthfeel is thin, watery and moderately carbonated. However, it does dry your mouth out and isn't smooth at all, just bitter.
I'm pretty unsure about their intentions with this. Got this as part of a Christmas gift of beers from Saskatoon brewpubs from my brother-in-law. Their website doesn't talk about their beers at all, just their restaurant menu. Website menu states that they use "the finest natural ingredients, including Saskatchewan raised malts, Yakama (Yakima?) Valley hops and the highest quality of liquid yeast." I decided to review this more along the lines of a Bitters even though it's labelled by the brewer as a Pale Ale. This really isn't drinkable. Way overboard with the hops and with no malt presence give this beer no balance at all.
