The beer pours a darkish brown color with a quick settling head. The label does not mention a beer style, but says dark and malty with big american hop bitterness and flavor, so I figured it must be an American stout. For the style it is too light in color.
The smell is malty with notes of dark baked bread and biscuits. The dark/black malts are a little laid back, but after a few sniffs, they come out. The hops add a citrus hoppiness with a raw edge to it. Typical of American hops, I guess.
Taste is nice, the first sip is a mix of big alcohol flavor and strong, American bitterness, rounded by the dark malts. It is hard to tell where the hops end and the malt bitterness starts. The bitterness is a bit hard, something I would expect from Columbus hops. It develops after a few sips and puts a layer on the tongue. This is one bitter beer. The beer is somewhat balanced by the malt base, which is medium malty.
