1991-1992 vintage purchased at Beer Mania in Brussels in 2004; Opened on Aug 22, 2005 with friends.
Cork was well saturated but top between cork and crown top was just slightly sour vinegar, not over the top.
Aroma was amazing, slightly sour fruit with some malt and spicing. Body was moderate. Flavor was ever so slightly sour with nice malt balance. No hop aroma or flavor.
Very distinct beer, the aroma was so enticing that I barely wanted to drink it. For a 14 year old beer this is one that has aged VERY well. Thanks to Don and Mike for sharing this with me on a beautiful late summer evening.

This beer is no longer produced. The 75cl bottle I purchased at Beer Mania was bottled sometime between 1986 and 1991.
Bottle condition: glass is clean and undamaged, the label is well into decomposition (flakes off very easily... the orange and black color is faded), the cork is deteriorated (beer started bubbling up out of it as soon as I popped the cap), smells sour between the crown-cap and the cork (beer might be undrinkable)
Appearance: beautiful reddish amber color, slight haze, big stack of creamy off-white foam, great head retention, nice lace
Aroma: honey, sweetly malty, musty, a bit of mold, green apples, some woodsy hops, alcohol, lactic
Flavor: a slight caramelly maltiness, quite tart, rusty, vinous, corky, stale crackers, a very light hop flavor, very little bitterness (until swirling and adding the sediment), finish is tart and dry with a musty appley aftertaste
Mouthfeel: medium body, gentle carbonation, alcohol warmth, acidic
Overall Impression: I have no idea how this beer was supposed to taste. I'd venture to guess the sourness is something that developed over time. Despite how it was back in circa 1992, at this point it is quite a complex beer. While it doesn't have the full range of lambic funk, the sour mustiness definitely gives it a gueuze quality. Had no idea what to expect from this beer. It's my first "vintage" beer and, as such, a pretty good experience.
