Coming in a 500ml brown glass bottle, BB 16/02/2007, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: dark reddish-amber in colour; the fluffy white beer head settles fast, while the carbonation softens slowly, with occasional huge bubbles ejecting from the bottom of the glass.
S: lightly citric-fruity, reminiscent of Goldings mainly; also at present are a tinge of softly sweet pale malts, lightly-caramelised sugar, boiled potatos, and hints of hays... overall pretty standard for a malty bitter, not unbalanced and nothing exciting.
T: floral and acidic-sweet malty upfront, with an astringent edge of Goldings hops, and more hints of burned sugar and herbal sweetness to linger with a light tinge of bitter hops in the end. Semi dry finish apart from being slightly watery and grainy-sour down the sides of the tongue.
M&D: lightly spritzy on the mouthfeel overall, not overdone, but pretty thin and not smooth enough for a premium ale. Having not tried the cask version, I'd conclude here that the bottled one is mediocre at best, albeit not below average. I do suspect that it's pasteurised even, due to the burned-sugary taste throughout...
