Alewife and I stopped into the VPB for a late lunch on 01JUN after visiting Trapp and before heading back to Bristol.... She got the Scotch Ale; the RIS worked for me!
Served in an 8oz mini-stein, this bier was deep and dark, like motor oil. Head was a rich beige color, and it was über-creamy and smooth. As I quaffed, the foam completely stuck to all sides in a thick coating all the way down. The nose was, oddly, a bit mild, with roasty malts and some floral hops evident. The bier was very smooth, silky and creamy on the tongue, though the body was a bit less than medium.
Flavor had some sweetness without being cloying along with some super roasty, choco notes. Great malts here, all around! Also had a touch of toffee and mocha, too. The finish had a fair amount of flowery hopping, with a suggestion of rindy citrus. The 8% ABV was, scarily, well hidden. Hence, only 2 glasses were quaffed before the ride home. A solid bier, imo... Zum Wohl!!
