Fearless ESB poured a brownish red with a tiny, discreet amount of head. The aroma was airy, light and hoppy. I was surprised by the roastiness of the malts, which reminded me of a robust brown ale, or even a doppelbock. However, they remained smooth, almost buttery. The hops were very sweet, with large citric qualities, and a floral, perfumey taste that I thought could be toned down a notch. Mouthfeel was smooth and still, and made the drinkability good, even if it wasn't compulsive.

Nothing in this beer grabbed me. The taste was foul and meaty and the aroma was a big turn off. The scant head and sporadic lace are consistent with the style, as is the clear brew of bronze-garnet color. But the bitterness is bland and never comes to life, and the aroma has a troubled measure of spoilage. The mouthfeel also grows astringent in the finish.

This alleged ESB deserves a thoughtful retreat back to the proverbial drawing board.
