On-draught @ Russian River in August 2016. 5.00% ABV.
APPEARANCE: Classic soft white cap lasts 4-5 minutes over a pale copper body. Clear, without visible yeast/lees sediment (to style). Above average vibrance.
AROMA: Pale malts, faint floral hop character. It comes off more like a reticent pale ale than a proper steam beer - and I think in the competent hands of Russian River's brewers, that may be a good thing.
Aromatic intensity is below average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Medium-bodied, slightly creamy, smooth, wet, and a bit overcarbonated.
Pale malts and floral hops give this the bulk of its flavour, with some unchecked hop bitterness sneaking in there to the detriment of its balance.
Overall, a drinkable a pleasant but not dazzling attempt at a steam beer. Discerning drinkers would do better sticking to Anchor's canonical brew, but this tries to take the style to a more hoppy pasture - which may be just what frequenters of Russian River have in mind.
