On tap at the Toronado 2008 B-wine fest.

The beer poured a light copper with a small white head.

The aroma of the beer was of sweet caramel malts with a touch of oxidation. The hops were still in the nose and smelled lightly citrusy and earthy.

The flavor of the beer was of light sweet caramel and an assertive hop bitterness. It remined me of a slightly lighter version of Stone's Old Gaurdian. The malt profile wasn't particularly deep and the caramel aspect could've been more developed. The hop/malt balance was good.

The carbonation was dialed in well and the mouthfeel was medium/heavy, but missed some creaminess that I prefer in my b-wines.

This was more of an American strong ale to me than an American barleywine. While the flavors were clean, it just didn't have enough malt intensity to really make it stand out. Not bad, but not particularly impressive.

Toronado B'wine fest 2008. This is the 2006 vintage that we are dealing with here. Aromas of big time metallic and medicinal green hops with a lot of alpha acid funky hop talk. Sweetness shins but malts are muted for some reason, in this strange b'wine dub ipa hop blend. Taste is hoppy but honestly lacks some of the complexity that could be there also this is more of a dub ipa than a barleywine as the sweet finish lacks and malt complexity. Mouthfeel is a bit sticky sweet and drinkability is good as well. This is still solidly good and '4' in all categories as a beer, but as a barleywine it is somewhat lacking and certainly not up to par with other RR beers that I have had over the years. Than again maybe this beer is meant to be drunk fresh, or maybe this 2006 keg just couldn't hold on long enough tio realyl make its mark. Who knows?

2006 from the Toronado:

Poured a copper color, a little ligher than a penny and a decent white head accompanied it. Nose was sweet, hoppy and bitter. The taste was a blend of bitterness and some good solid malt. Was not overly hopped as some BWines are(and taste more like Double IPA)Sweet finish.

This arrived as a very pale copper color with a small head. Lace was minor.

The smell was dominated by hops. Bitterness and grapefruit flavor both come through. Hops take over the front of the taste and run all the way through the finish. The mouthfeel was medium. Drinkability is held back not body or alcohol, but hops.

Not a bad beer on its own, but it is lacking the deep malt flavors and hefty body that I enjoy in a barleywine. It's much more of a double IPA.
