Beer review from 3/12/12, on tap: pours cloudy/opaque reddish brown color with a small tan head that faded fast and left decent spotty lacing.

Smells of black cherry, dark fruit like plum or grapes that are souring, sweet malt, syrup, caramel, brown sugar, candy, brandy and mild alcohol, and some herbs or yeast funk that timid; a very odd nose that is hard to pin down.

Tastes of dark cherry, raisin, apple cider, dark fruit like plum or grapes, sweet malt, light wheat, syrup, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, candy, brandy and mild alcohol heat that fades quickly, and then some light burnt wood; very sweet overall that tastes just as much like a liquor as it does a beer. Very interesting concoction that goes down easy considering the ABV.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with very low carbonation, a medium body and a sweet tart feel that resembles souring fruit. Interesting beer, but not very drinkable. A slow slipper to try and experiment with, this was very mellow, complex and different. Worth a try, but not one I’d seek out.

Kelso Barrel-Aged Recessionator, a Dopplebock aged in Heaven Hill barrels. Yum! Had this at Birdsall in Peekskill a while ago and then at Pony Bar in Hell's Kitchen, NYC, from which I am reviewing.

Appearance: Served in a 16-oz pint (nice!), this brew comes almost overflowing, with no head and just some bubbles around. Looks very flat, but leaves remarkable lacing. Color is chestnut puree with some barrel/wood color. Very opaque!

Smell: Not superb, but hey, smells of BOURBON, baby! :-) Gotta love it. Vanilla, booze, wood- you got it. It's all there. Caramel, brown sugar. Desserty!

Taste: Again, it's all about the bourbon. Less pronounced than the nose, a bit thin as it goes down, but still delicious. Some chocolate and cake flavor. Caramel on the back of the last sip.

Mouthfeel: More balanced than the taste, with more carbonation and body. Nicely balanced. Sligthly spiced at the end. Full flavor, medium body, low-to-medium carbonation.

Overall: SO drinkable! Poundable indeed. Not terribly complex, not the best barrel-aged beer out there, not even the best spirit to age beer, but still a delicious brew. Because bourbon tastes oh-so-good!

If you like bourbon, you will like this. Best Kelso yet, no doubt.
