Cherry Berliner WeisseCherry Berliner Weisse
Notes: Beginning as a traditional German-style Berliner Weisse, it is conditioned on sour cherries to provide hints of fruit flavors. This is a refreshing wheat ale with a slightly tart finish.

12 oz bottle from Tiger Mart (Clemson, SC) into a lager glass in January 2019.

Look: Clear, pale copper-rose colored body with excellent clarity. This is topped by a fairly durable, white head.

Aroma: mild; berries and faint bread.

The flavor leans towards mild for style but nicely showcases the cherries, especially in the finish and aftertaste. Excellent balance. Lightly tart.

Feel: medium-light body with lively, medium-light carbonation.

Overall: a mild but exceptional version of the style.

Light cloudy orange beer with a rapidly fading head. Taste is sour cherries and wheat. Refreshing and probably best for summer days although I'm enjoying it on a cold winter day.

I keep picking up these loose bottles at various Mix-a-Six places throughout the city! I am currently working as a day-to-day substitute teacher, so each day is like a Monday - in a different building in a different part of the city on a daily basis, starting anew. My nomadic lifestyle enables me to pop in at places that I might not otherwise frequent & see what is hiding in the cooler(s). I am rarely disappointed!

From the bottle: "German-style Wheat Ale aged with tart cherries".

I agitated this beer while still in the bottle to get the full-on wheat ale experience. Having Pop!ped the cap, I employed a heavy-handed aggro pour just to ensure that nothing was missed. The two fingers of foam looked like freshly-spun pink cotton candy until they faded away into memory as wisps. Color was a cloudy pinkish-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) or (SRM = N/A). Nose had the tartness of tart/sour cherries & I was ready for some of this beer! Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it, either. The taste was a bit weak for both the style & its inclusion of tart cherries. I like the twang of a Berliner Weissebier and the tartness of sour/tart cherries, but this seemed kind of muted. Finish was semi-dry. I would not describe it as "dumbed-down", but it was as though they did not give the horse free reign to roam. There was nothing wrong with this beer, per se, but it could be much improved if they would allow the flavors to become more prevalent.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden with foamy white head. Nose is of wheat malt, funky yeast and sour cherries. Body is medium and tangy. Taste is of sour cherries, wheat malt and some spices. Finish is long and tart. Refreshing brew.

Orange cloudy color. Strong smell of wheat which actually overpowered the abundance of cherries. Came off to me like a cherry sour but the wheat actually softened the sour element. I like this brewery and I enjoyed this this offering

Hazy pinkish red. Pink head
Smells of strawberry Greek yogurt
Taste is the same
Great feel though. Creamy. Bubbly

Nice feel and look but I didn't like the smell or taste sadly.

Pours a hazy straw with a quickly dissapating finger and a half head. Settles down quickly. Faint cherry aroma and taste with a bit of tartness. Light fresh feel...great with a meal.

Poured from a 12oz bottle (no date) into a Spiegelau wheat glass.
LOOK: Pours with a half finger's worth of white foam that halves itself after 30 seconds. A peachy pink (for lack of a better description) in color with an extreme amount of cloudiness. Only when half up to direct light, can you see the subtle amount of small bubbles rising to the top. Lacing is moderate and mostly thin with few spots of thickness.
SMELL: Very strong aroma of wheat nearly overpower the mild aromas of sour cherries (which I personally do not like) and hints of sour yeast.
TASTE: Strong flavors of wheat and mild flavors of sour yeast enter initially. Mild flavors of sour cherry enter right after as wheat flavors grow slightly stronger, but sour yeast flavors grow significantly weaker.
FEEL: Light-bodied and subtly carbonated. Goes down incredibly smooth, but is to thin to be considered creamy. Ends with a thirst-quenching finish. The sourness from this brew is not even strong enough to tickle the tongue.
NOTE: This is hardly a Berliner Weisse. It screams more of a barely soured pale wheat ale to me. The flavor overall was mediocre. I'll admit that this is a biased review because I do not like those little sour cherries that are always in milkshakes.

8/2...pours hazy, light amount of foam. Nose is tart - cherry and wheat. Taste is a tart forward citrus, with a slight fruitiness. Juicy. Quite the refreshing summer sour. Good addition to the lineup.

Appearance: slightly hazy golden yellow with thing white head

Aroma: Mild wheat notes, no lacto or cherry to speak of

Taste: Very mild sour/lacto - barely there at all. Has a wheaty/grainy quality to it along with some yeast. Finishes with a touch of cherry.

Mouthfeel: med-light body and carbonation

Overall: very "meh" to me. It drinks more like a blonde ale than a Berliner. As someone who likes very tart Berliners, this just didn't hit the mark for me. I'm sure River Horse was going for something more drinkable by the masses here and they've done that. It's a decent intro to lactic sours but that's about it for me.

Poured with relish (the feeling, not the condiment) into a pilsner glass

Sight: A stark white, dense head sits like the foam on top of a latte. Underneath the head the body boasts a grapefruit-like tone, replete with a nice yeasty haze. Yup, I swirled the last few ounces and gradually poured everything out. The head settles down to a small but persistent cap.

Aroma: Faint cherry and cracker-like combination. It’s very subtle. Can one smell “tartness?” Fruity esters. Maybe it’s lactic acid I perceive? No hops to speak of.

Taste: Tart cherry, a touch of sourness, nice malty, cracker-like support. It’s dry and a little woody. Were there oak chips involved?

Feel: Light to medium-light. A bit of scrubby carbonation, refreshing, cleansing. I could drink this all day- that’s sort of the point.

Overall: Pleasant, easy to drink. Great mouthfeel. Not exactly traditional, but a wonderful fruity offering for summer consumption. River Horse provides a tasty alternative to their Summer Blonde. I love the hippo-wench with the blond braids, corset and red lipstick. I bet this would be great on draft.

first review? don't mind if I do. really nice beer, slick mouth feel and tart and sweet cherry flavors, well balanced. a little grassy/herbal/earthy quality. such a good beer, easy drinking, not overly tart. I wouldn't say it's like the classic Berliner Weiss, but it definitely fits into the category, just enough. great stuff
