Barley and Hops
Maryland, United States

Notes / Commercial Description:
An American style pale ale with a medium body and plenty of hops. Straw golden in color, this ale starts with a slight bread grain and caramel sweetness which is quickly overcome by a floral and pine like bitterness. The beer finishes clean and crisp. It’s great for complimenting a spicy dish.

As far as pale ales go, this one was a little on the not-so-hoppy side, as I think other reviewers pointed out. I would really like to see an IPA out of this place, but the pale is smooth and drinkable; just not very challenging. Whats left is a beer that goes down pretty easy, with no aftertaste, but ends up just a tad bland. Overall though, it's not a bad sit-out-on-the-patio-and-drink beer.

It is very important to support independent restaurants & beer. Without independent business, the world would spiral into the black hole of homogenized McWalmart land, never to return.

I really want to like Barley & Hops and their beers. It's fantastic that there are two brewpubs in tiny Frederick, Maryland. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant are fairly classy. Its obvious that much hard work & sweat were put behind this venture. Even the food I ordered (Portobello mushroom sandwich) was very tasty and high above average.

But OUCH, this "Annapolis Rocks Pale Ale" is a BAD BEER.

First of all, it has no business being called a Pale Ale, in any sense of the word. The appearance is the most normal thing about it. It looks like a pale ale should. But its all downhill from there.

Smell is nonexistant. I put my nose in the glass and inhaled. Nothing. I reinserted my nose & snorted. Still nothing. Maybe some bubbles up my nose.

Taste - ack. No semblance of pale ale taste whatsoever. More like Michelob. You know - where you drink it, and it's pretty watery & tasteless, and then at the end, you get the faintest hint of hops.

There is no mouthfeel. Maybe the feel of water washing down your throat. Some carbonation.

Obviously this beer has no drinkability. I dont think I would ever take the chance of drinking it again, unless I was informed that the recipe was improved dramatically.

Now, I understand that when you market beer, you have to aim straight down the middle. If you cant manufacture something that will appeal to people with mainstream tastes, you're going to have troubles. Barley & Hops attempted to walk the line with this Pale Ale & failed. I mean, you have to take at least ONE small chance with your recipe, to make it stand out, be remembered, etc. This beer took none, and in doing so, didnt even hit mediocrity - it fell far below that line.

pours a golden yellow with a pure white head that remained about a half inch thick until my beer was gone. left some nice lacing.

Smells very hoppy with some citrus. nice smelling pale ale.

Taste is floral hops with some lemon. the flavor of the hops remains for a while after the beer. nice flavor.

Mouthfeel is pretty light, but not overly so. the carbonation and flavor were good for the summer day.

I was really surprised when i read many of the other reviews, especially the ones that said it tasted watered down. I thought the hops were obviously there and tasted really nice and that they balanced them well with some malts towards the back of the flavor. Maybe the brewery has some issues with consistency? Regardless, I definitely enjoyed this beer.

Pretty good pale ale. Smooth, balanced, slightly malted but overall not a bad pale ale. Even better on nitro

Pours golden with a thin white head that becomes a wide patch. Some lacing sticks.

The smell is citric - lemony - bready/biscuity background with a hint of fennel.

The taste is of sweet bicuity breadiness and graininess. Citric and floral hop flavor is there, but without the bitterness. A thinness keeps the flavor subdued. Leans malty. Light-bodied, bordering watery thin. Alcohol is well-covered despite thinness.

A light pale ale that is easy enough to drink - though would not "session", as it's too uninteresting and slightly imbalanced (leaning too much towards a blandish sweetness, losing the promising balance that was in the aroma) and too thin. The hop aroma almost becomes completely lost in the flavor.

I'm surprised at the various reviews that are lower than I would have expected, given my own experience in April 2008. This beer was my keeper for the night, after trying the 6 on-tap that were being offered.

A= slightly cloudy lighter golden-yellow. Modest head.

S= strong bold floral hops, bitters apparent in the scent.

T= bold strong floral hops bitters, light citrus but no grapefruity overbalance like many of the newer pop-craft PA's.

M= nice strong floral hops-bitters lingering but nothing that eats your mouth away.

D= very drinkable if you're into the hops-scene.

Draft at the brewpub. This glass came with a crystal clear yellow-tinged bronze with a thin but solid foam head. The aroma is an excellent one of citrus-flowers, sucking me right into the quaff. Then a creamy mouthfeel and a nice light hoppiness presenting itself as citrusy and slightly metallic. Pretty good American pale. (#2712, 2/18/2007)

I am a fan of hops, but I don't always like an in-your-face beer. There rae times that a nicely balanced brew is the ticket. This beer should fill that bill, but I'm afraid it falls short. The hop aroma and flavor is barely there and gave it a watered down flavor. Maybe Greg changed the recipe? One of the other reviews said it was very bitter....not in the one I tried. Disappointing amidst a lot of other good beers on tap. Will return again to give it a chance.

This used to be horrible and while it is still not bangn' it is not bad anymore. A nice pale color with a decent head that left lacing down the glass. Smell of mild hop blast from the northwest with a lingering malt haze. A good beer up front and a decent Pale Ale that will do, but what half kills it is the "butter". I hope they get a hold of this problem and don't ignore the response card I left. If the diacetyl gets worse it could ruin everything. Anyway not too bad of a body and the only thing drinkable about it is that there is nothing better here except the stout which also seems to have a little diacetyl tonight.
