I cracked a couple of these last night as I "decompressed" from the day job.

In short:

- As an American Pale Ale this would rate as average to above average.
- As a new-school American Pilsner of the "Wussie" variety, it also rates about average.
- As a "throwback" Pilsner of any variety it misses the mark for a couple of reasons:

1. How many German Pilsners were brewed with Cascades? How many American Pilsners were?
2. How many of either were dry-hopped?

If I had to rate it based on those quick takes ("Average, Average, and Below Average and/or Does Not Qualify") the beer would probably be seen as a failure.

However, the brewers at Cold Spring's Third Street division took a reasonably novel approach in re-imagining one of their very own heritage brands. American Pilsners of the 1970s were not as well regarded as their German or European counterparts, and for the most part that impression carried into the Craft Beer era. With a handful of American-brewed exceptions, German Pilsner (and its derivative, American cousin) is a style seen by many Craft Beer hobbyists as boring and lifeless.

To this end, dry-hopping with Cascades (especially under the Cold Spring name) should be seen by most who come across this brand in its native environs as a very welcome change, indeed.

Yet as someone who prizes traditional Bavarian / German Pils it was awkward listing this as German Pilsner when entering it into Beer Advocate's database (is there still no room for American Pilsner place at the big table?)

At any rate, while it might be stylistically confused, the beer itself has good drinkability for its 5.8%, and it is not a downright bad beer, either. Altogether it's above "3" (so between execrable and excellent), and I'm sure that many will find it above average. I'd like to dry it on draught, so I guess I'll be hunting for it this weekend. : )

Third Street Gold lager is one of my go to cheap 12ers, how can you beat 12 - 16 oz beers for under 13 bucks! This is just as good of a deal, but they took the lager a step further and made it a pilsner! Under $10 after tax for a 12 pack of 12 oz. Still wish beer advocate would factor in price...

Clear light golden color, thick quickly dissapating white head, aroma is faint all around -slight sweet corn/wheat aroma. Taste is very light, couldnt be closer to water but still very refeshing, carbination is minimal which some may complain about for a “fizzy light beer” but it makes it less bloating, great cheap pizza beer.
