"Heavy Seas'ons greetings! As a special thank you to our beer drinking public and supporters of our Uncharted Waters, we offer this malty Weizen Dopplebock aged in Jamaican Rum Barrels. 'Mon'! Yule Tide is sure to make you comfortable on a cold winter's evening. You could pair this with your mother's fruit cake, but everyone would laugh at you." Brewed in the style of a Weizenbock aged in Rum barrels. Part of the Uncharted Waters series, a winter seasonal release brewed as a one-off in a rotating style. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter.
(Appearance) Pours a crisp, fizzy head of a tan-cinnamon color over a deep brown body with moderate haziness and ample carbonation. Retention is poor and there is no lacing. 2.5
(Smell) Toasted bread malts, malted wheat and caramelized sugars with a gentle fruitiness. There is not nearly as much rum character as I had expected, and the aroma is a fairly pedestrian weizenbock, clean with a gentle spiciness and delicate phenols. Potency is moderate. 3.5
(Taste) More pronounced syrupy malt character with lesser bread and wheat malt body, a slight fruitiness and nutty flavor, with gentle clove and banana spiciness. Again, the rum barrel aging is very slight in this beer and does not elevate the flavor beyond the base style. Enjoyable, but ordinary. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, softly chewy, lightly syrupy, medium dry. Carbonation is mellow, generating a mild frothiness and a medium crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is nearly even sweet to spicy, tangy and phenols. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.75
(Overall) A pretty ordinary, but enjoyable weizenbock that doesn't get much of an impact from the rum barrel aging. This is a year that doesn't really come off as phenomenal, but not every year is going to be a winner. 3.5

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a Teku 3.0 glass. Vintage 2014. Aged in rum barrels.
4/3.75/4/3.5/4.25
A: Opaque, muddy mahogany. Little to no head.
S: Sweet, rummy, and malty. So much malt.
T: Mild, light/soft, and sweet. There is a fruitiness that cuts through, but is mercurial. It's sometimes stonefruit (peach?) and sometimes darker (blackberries). The sweetness is sometimes overwhelming.
M: Flat and smooth.
O: Overall, I dig this beer. Especially for the style. It's unclear what the aging (both rum and in bottle) contributes, but overall, do drink, if not seek out.

2015 Edition
Look: Deep reddish-brown with a one-finger foam head; dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing.
Aroma: Spicy rum, very strong ginger.
Taste: Light rum but not too boozy, the ginger is very much dominating on the backend.
Feel: Low carbonation, the rum lasts ok the aftertaste but it's balanced by the ginger.

look: Dark Mahogany. Sparse tan head and modest lacing.
smell: Malty, dark fruit, some yeasty spice.
taste: Richer than the nose. Getting some of the rum with a nice burn and a bit of spice in the finish.

Reddish-brown in color with a good body to it. The nose and flavor profile are filled with seasonal spices but the ginger stands out above them all. The finish for this unique offering is semi-dry.
This is a great seasonal beer – my only critique might be to rein in the ginger a bit.

A Weizen Doppelbock? The rum barrel is easy enough to tell, but it makes for an unusual one to quite pin down.
This one is a tawny red-brown, not terribly dark but too thick to see through. Some ruby highlights shine through. The head is a light brown one about half a finger's height that stays up well and leaves good patching behind.
This one's got the gentle Belgian yeast, just enough alcoholic heat with a bit of woodier notes to tone down a strong sweetness, and some dark fruit, molasses, caramel and toffee notes running through. A bit of cocoa comes through and finishes out with something that's not smoky but a similar type of wood note. Very nice, very warming, but not too hot. The main element of the overall character is a raisin/fig sort of note, but with an earthiness that isn't entirely devoid of funk. I like it.
The body is good but drops off a bit as it goes, firm crispness not too hard and a good smoothness to it.
