Brewed in collaboration with our friend and noted fermentation expert Sandor Katz. This Lichtenhainer style ale is a tart pale ale brewed with Beechwood-smoked malts. It was fermented and soured in stainless with a blend of bacteria from Sandor and our house lacto strain.

12 ounce bottle, released 2017 printed on the label. Got this as a single on the bargain shelf recently so I figured it wasn't fresh when I bought it. Served in a Spiegelau wheat beer glass, the beer pours a somewhat hazy dark gold color with about a quarter inch off-white head that stayed around for a bit. Not much lacing. Aroma is nice, smokiness stands out but there's also some wheat and citrus noticeable too. Considering the age it's still tasty, as with the aroma I think the smoke is stronger compared to the other flavors. Just as with the aroma, the smoky flavor is stronger compared to the wheat and citrus. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's easy to drink with a low/moderate amount of carbonation. Wish I would have got the chance to try this one fresher since it likely would have been more flavorful then, but can't complain since I got it on sale and knew it was old when I bought it.

Yeah, no. The "bacon" characteristic on the nose and tongue (and even on the greasy feel) is truly awful. Remarkable that such strong meaty notes can be created via wood, but that doesn't make the drinking experience any more pleasant.

Hazy Canary yellow color with very little cap and no apparent lacing. Nice color though.
Aroma of sour citrus primarily, with detectable smoke in the background.
Taste on entry is citrusy tart and I like that. Sourness is evident but in a balancing way. Then it hits you, smoked bacon. I kid you not, smoked bacon. Now, I've been known to drink a tart wheat ale while eating a BLT so I can't say I don't like the flavor combination, but it's a bit of a jolt to find bacon in the beer. Brewer says this effect is due to smoking the malt over Beechwood, I say whatever, still tastes like bacon. I can say the tart/sour combination is refreshing, and if it weren't for the smoke palate cleansing as well.
Light to medium texture with balancing carbonation.
I didn't know this was a smoked beer when I bought it, just grabbed it because it was fresh, new and the name was unpronounceable. Would I have bought it anyway? Sure, even though I haven't had much luck with smoked beers in the past that's no excuse to pass up something different. I can see why beer was brewed this way in the olden days when malt was dried over smoke producing flames but I really don't think there's room in my fridge for this today.

Admittedly not my favorite style, but overall good.
Nose smelled like bacon over a campfire.
Very smoky flavor, with hints of wood.
Interesting sour.
