A beer only a thirsty woodpecker could love. Served on the warmish side in the pint nonic, the better to get the full impact, I guess. Very light body and the foamy amber glassful looks nice enough.

The first taste is shocking. It's simply and utterly oak flavors that seem to be missing the beer entirely. Huge vanlla flavor, really dry, and totally woody. It's like sawdust-- quite aromatic but bitter with pine sap and wood. Aroma is all vanilla and sawmill. This is just undrinkable from sawdust start to bitter turpentine finish.

On tap at the Thirsty Bear in San Francisco [notes from 01/24/2013 visit].

Reviewed from notes; originally 6/9/11.

A-Served in a nonic pint glass with a burgundy color and a finger of white head.

S-Toasted and caramel malt notes with herbal hops.

T-Chocolate and some caramelly and cracker malt notes with a light citrus hop finish.

M-Medium bodied with low carbonation and a very smooth, slick feel.

D-Quite a bit different than a lot of ESB's that I've with the chocolate malt character on this one.

Rustwater appearance with no head. Murky, foggy. It reeks of buttery diacetyl and spicy nutmeg-like oak. Toffee and butterscotch sweetness runs rampant beneath the oak and diacetyl. Buttery astringent oak is all-consuming on the palate. Butterscotch, toffee, nutmeg. Thin but sweet with an astringent finish. Wow, this is awful.
