This world famous bock from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain is not meant to be rushed, but savoured slowly. As solid as a rock, Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel presides over the evening meal with a colour reminiscent of dark copper with nuances of fiery red. Its clear gleaming look harmonises with its firm, fine pored head.
Also the aroma delights the connoisseur: soft roasted accents and a nuance of dried fruit carrying a vein of caramel. This Doppelbock Dunkel from Bavaria’s Holy Mountain presents a pleasant effervescence. And then there’s the unmistakable flavour: mouthcoating and velvety, strong and yet pleasantly malty – a powerful, robust body. At the same time, it develops an easily recognisable sweetness, embraced in roasted cocoa and a light, bitter hoppiness.
Concluding with a powerful punch, this Doppelbock departs with a lingering aftertaste of quality plain chocolate. A strong Doppelbock that embodies the centuries old Benedictine brewing tradition, sip by delicious sip.

Poured a 500ml brown bottle into a pint glass. A big three finger fine tan head on a clear dark amber brown. The head soon diminishes to a layer that sticks around. minimal lacing.
Caramel in the nose. Bready. Some apple. The taste is bready malts, caramel and toffee. Initially sweet but the strong malts seem to attenuate the sweetness.
Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Very smooth. It feels lighter than it is. A well hidden ABV. Overall a superb Dopplebock. Complex ans well balanced. Well worth a try.

500 ml bottle purchased in January from LCBO while visiting Hamilton, Ontario. Best by 30/04/2026.
Pours a a deep garnet highlighted clear mahogany colour with a finger of reddish beige head.
The aroma is an intoxicating mix of bready, toasty malt, brown sugar, caramel, some date and dark fruits.
Sweet toasty malt on the palate with caramel and dark brown sugar, raisin bread pudding with a hint of chocolate.
Medium full mouthfeel with moderate carbonation with a smooth warming soft and sweet booziness.

Thin, off-white head. Medium caramel/chestnut appearance. Sweet caramel with a toasted butterscotch aroma. A touch of woody sharpness, starts off the taste, then a spiced caramel main flavor with a touch of sweetness. Medium bodied with a good wood tinged caramel finish.

Kappeln 29/4 2018. 50 cl from tap at Biereakademie.
Pours dark brown with a big off-white head. Settles as a 2 cm thick layer of creamy foam. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is intense and sweet. Dark fermented sweet fruit. Figs, dates and sugar. Light smoky notes.
Light carbonation. Medium thick slightly oily texture.
Flavor heavy sweet followed by medium bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and boozy. Lingering.
Reminds me a little of a Belgian Quadruple - without hitting the mark exactly. But a solid German Doppelbock.

BeerAdvocate 20th Anniversary and Untappd 10th Anniversary Review #6. Previous reviews can be found on Untappd (see link in profile). This one was poured from a 500ml bottle purchased at the Osler LCBO in Dundas, ON.
L: Very dark ruby hue, clear as a bell when held to the light, with a two-finger, off-white cap. A few strands of lacing on the lager glass.
S: Toasted pumpernickel, semi-sweet chocolate and toffee. Some dried fig, with a hint of alcohol.
T: Mostly follows the nose.
F: Full side of medium-bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth, lightly sweet middle. Semi-dry finish, with some warmth going down.
O: An exercise in subtlety, this is a textbook German doppelbock that hews closely to the style. Worth trying.

Not much to look at to be honest. Pours a short, short-lived sparling head like a Coke. No lace. Looks like strong dark tea, crystal clear. But honest in its own way, I suppose.
Appetizing nose. Gently sweet and very slightly boozy to taste, but overall very nice maltiness and depth.
Yum. Good beer to settle to your comfy chair with.

Tried this with a butterfinger and it was an excellent pairing. The butterfinger complimented the caramel and roasted cocoa enough that it felt like it was made specifically to pair with this beer.

At my lady Pamela's house; bottled and slightly chilled, 500mL in a weizen glass. From the Huron Church Rd. LCBO in nearby Windsor. Best before April 30/26. My second beer from the Andechs, Germany brewery, and for 2025. Respected by Sundae the cat...

Perfection. A world class beer and it doesn’t get any better than this. The standard by which all German doppelbock’s should be measured against. Outstanding!

I've had it at Kloster Andechs twice.First time, in 1978, I was young and hearty. Just one.
In 2023, I was told not to have a second.
I could not resist. Driven back to Pähl, I fell asleep on the garden chaise lounge and woke up 2 hours later.
It is my favorite of all the German double bock beers.
I found 4 bottles at BevMo in California.
It did not travel well and was disappointing.
