Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Contrary to what it says here on Beer Advocate, this beer is not retired. The bottle I drank was bottled in August 2010.

This beer was quite the spectacle. Once opened, the beer gushed out the top like beers tend to do sometimes. What was odd was that after it had gushed for a second or two, a whole hop cone came shooting out the top and landed on the counter next to the beer. Pretty cool as I had never seen that before.

Anyway, the beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is yeast with some grain notes as well as some orange citrus notes from the hops. The beer is not as hoppy smelling as I imagined, especially when you consider that it had a hop cone in the bottle.

The flavor is hoppier, but not very bitter. I get a lot of orange and grass notes from the hops. I also get some yeast and wheat notes that keep the bitterness level fairly low. Pretty good flavor overall, but not quite as good as I expected.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bought it from FinestBelgianBeers.com. Very hoppy for a Belgium but definitely worth a try.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. A friend had picked some of this up as well and warned me ahead of time that the bottle would explode with beer if opened quickly. It took me nearly 10 minutes of cracking the cap to let the air out, but I finally got it poured without losing a drop of beer. The hop flower shooting up to the top was very cool. Very cloudy yellow-orange pour with lots of floaties and a huge head that fades quickly with decent lacing. The nose is pretty typical for a Belgian Pale Ale with lots of sour wet grass, grain and yeast with some subtle hoppiness. The taste is surprisingly smooth, with none of the sour grassiness I was expecting. It has an earthy fruitiness to it with hints of lemon zest and a solid caramel maltiness with just a touch of black pepper. Nice bitter, tangy hop bite on the finish with decent drinkability. A surprisingly solid beer.

Bottle from ABS Drinks outside Brussels. From notes.

A - First off there is a full hop flower in the bottle which is very cool to see. I'm suprised American breweries haven't caught on to this. Poured a dark gold with no head. Lot's of chunks in the glass with parts of hop flower and yeast. Hop flower is a nice touch but honestly the only good looking thing about this golden coloured ale.

S - Citrussy and yeasty. Earthy with some mild hops. Mostly muted and mild.

T - Citrussy with some lemon and grassiness. Slight funk and earthiness. For something with a hop cone in it, it's not that hoppy.

M - Nice with a mild to medium carbonation level. Light to medium body and a slightly sour/bitter finish.

O/D - Not what I expected or wanted for that matter. Not a bad beer but hell, if you put a hop cone in the bottle, be prepared for hoppy expectations.

Bottled 17-11-05; aprox! 7% ABV and a sticker instead of a label saying label still has to be develloped. Says on the sticker beer with yeast and hops and inside is obiously a hopcone. Opening this botle shows that this beer is quiet unstable with this cone cause first that comes out is the cone followed by quiet some beer. Too bad of the gushing as the rest of the beer is more then ok. Nose is very flowery with lots of good hops remembering litle about the xx-bitter but much lower dosed and IMO more delicate. Nicely backed by palemalts and lots of fruityness also giving citrussy notes and sweet freshness to the brew. Taste is good too being full and tasty with nice bitterness that maybe hangs a litle but just lets you enjoy the brew longer. Quiet alcohilic, pale malty, dry and well bittered though not overdone. Fine brew that has good carbonisation in itself the enhances freshnes and plesant moutfeel that's overall dominated by bitterness and alcohol but nicely backed with full and good taste. Yes this is a good brew well worth a try but can just say be aware of gushing when opening one of bottling date 17-11-2005.
