22oz brown bottle, 2006.
Face Plant 2006 is brewed and bottled by Ska Brewing with the help of Steamworks Brewers and is brewed each year for the Iron Horse Bike Festival in Durango, CO. According to the brewers at Ska, it changes each year and this year's version is an ESB, with 5% ABV.
Sheer honeyed gold. Rocky head of tanned mixed size bubbles with loads of staying power that left fat, glass coating sheets of lacing. Eventually settled to a sticky cap. A few sluggish bubbles float upwards from the bottom of the glass. The aroma is piney citrus along with some honeyed malt notes and a hint of green apple. A jab of citrus rind meets the tongue first before fading into a solid malt base and then leading into the slightly spicy finish. There is some listing grapefruit rind as well as a brief tartness that catches in the back corners of the mouth. The malt comes up a bit with a few degrees of warming. This gains balance throughout consumption. Medium body with some fine, tingly carbonation and a nice slickly smooth mouthfeel. Initially, the ESB tag from the brewer seemed a bit off as the smell leaned towards APA. This was respectable, enjoyable and highly drinkable. After a few of these you may be doing faceplants of your own.
Thanks to Rossy for schlepping this one from CO after his brother's wedding.
