Had on tap in Rothenburg odt, Germany.
L: Pours a nice mahogany brown color. Thick tannish head.
S: Toasted malts and mild hops.
T/F: Nice malt backbone with toasted grains. A bit nutty. Very mild hop bitterness at the finish. Dry and delicious. Medium mouthfeel.
O: A nice German dunkel, and hard to find a bad beer in the country. This went great with a meal in Rothenburg and was a solid representation of the style. A little less malty/sweet than the standard dunkels we got in Munich which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

.5L von fass at the reichkuchen Meister Biergarten in Rothenberg, DE. The liquid was a light mahogany with a nice thick off white head that left nice lace.
The smell was a semi sweet medium roated nuty aroma.
The taste was really nice, drier the a true Muchener dunckel but many of the same nutty and roasty earthy notes.
The mouthfeel was basic lighter the medium body with a nice carbonation.
The drinkability was very good, on a warm summer day with a nice mid-day meal this beer was a delight and a welcome change from the other basic German offerings

Had on tap in Albrecht-Dürer-Stube in Nürnberg. They called it just Landwehr Dunkel.
Not that dark, more of an amber color. Generous offwhite head. Smell is light, although there are some rich malt smells hiding. Nutty, bready taste. Very easy drinking, quite light and smooth.

Sampled in a mug at a cellar restaurant in Rothenburg, Deutschland....
Appearance: Poured dark amber/sepia with a large (3 finger width) white-with-brownish-tinge head. Leaves rings of lacing down the glass.
Smell: Dark roasted malt with some German floral hops.
Taste: Initially moderately roasted, slightly sweet malt, with hints of coffee and caramel. Leads into a delicate bitterness and floral hops flavor. Finish and aftertaste are that of roasted barley malt and dry noble hops. Hoppiness is a bit less than I would have liked. A beer with substance!
Mouthfeel: Light bodied, a little too light. Smooth. Not much in the way of carbonation, almost flat.
Drinkability: Nice light consistency, but the strength of the malty flavor leaves me almost begging for a lighter beer. A good solid lager that I would reccomend having one (but just one) of.

Also called Altfrankische Dunkel or simply Landwehr Dunkles in some Taverns in the area of Rothenburg odT, Germany. Pretty much the bier of choice on tap there. Dark chestnut-brown in color, with a rocky head which sticks around a short bit, with decent lacing. Mild, roasty-malty aroma, with a medium-body. A touch more than normal carbonation tickles the tongue, as more roasty malt flavors hit you. There is some caramel thrown in, with a hint of hoppy-fruitiness at the dry finish. It's easy to have a few of these, while just chillin'.... (Original review from biers quaffed in Sep 2001 and updated Oct 2002).
