A deeply malty brown ale featuring Cherrywood smoked Pale Malt, the toasty, malty flavors of brown malt, and balanced with Bravo and Mt Hood hops for a very traditional Northern Bavarian smoked beer. The beer is a deliberately malty product, with a firmly biscuity, toasty aroma that well carries that smoke imparted from the malt. A fantastic accompaniment with smoked meats, fish or cheese, this beer is a wonderful Autumn elixir on its own. A treat for the aficionado of classic styles, this product will have very limited distribution.

Growler filled at Carmel Beverage, Carmel, NY

Pours clear typical brown ale brown. Moderate tan head, quickly goes to a film, a collar and leaves just some spotty lace.

Smells like a lightly smoked pork shoulder, which is a good thing.

Smooth n' malty, with more light smoke. Moderatly dry/hopped finish.

Some went inot a pork tenderloin marinade and some being enjoyed during the ball game.

Pleasing and easy drinking. Worth a try if ya like a malty brown ale with a moderate smoke infusion.

On tap at BAR in New Haven.

A: Clear chestnut body with a thin tan cap of fine bubbles. Ok retention, but practically no lace. Mediocre.

S: Fresh, spicy smokiness is all there is. Really vibrant woodiness to the smoke. Awesome.

T: Great smoke up front, but midway through some rougher components show up - overripe cherry, bitter char, and grainy malt. Still enjoyable, but not special.

M: Creamy medium body. Solid.

O: I got really excited about this one when I smelled it, and it was certainly a step up from the various house beers I sampled alongside it, but ultimately this wasn't quite special enough to seek out again. Certainly worth a try if you enjoy smoked beers, but there are better options available.

Cheers!

A_Chestnut brown with a wispy cap. No lacing.

S_Mild campfire smoke aroma

T_A mild caramel sweetness hits first followed immediately with just the right amount of smoke. Aftertaste pleasantly lingers w the campfire smoke.

M_ thinner bodied with an aggressive tight carbonation that hits the tongue immediately. Mellows out a bit mid sip.

O_A nicely done smoked beer. There is just the right amount of smoke and the accompanying caramel malt sweetness compliments it nicely.

$18 @ the local Joe Canals... for a 64ozer

eyes...
a consistent persistent haze in this mildly brown hued brew, head is fair and then relaxes (but never completely abandoning its post), some lazy bubbles stumble humbly to the top regions of the creation, all in all a good looking ale

nose...
when I first popped this the smoke wasn't apparent, now sitting for a few (while I spun clever words to describe the look), the smoke is "in de face" (as they say), you can smell the fire, so... if that is your thing you like, if not, you don't like... me? bring it the F on, I love the camp fire, there are some gentle touches of sweetness just underneath the sheath of smoky goodness, damn this is nice! I love the aggressive smoke here, sometimes overkill works, it does for me here.

taste etc...
medium and crisp mouthfeel... then slick with smoke, the finish begins with smoke, looms into sweet malts, then lingering smoke, damn drinkable, the smoke is pretty strong but if you like that... well, you will like this. smooth smooth smooth and fire, some bitterness is in there but this is more malt/smoke love than anything else, I like it.

verdict?
damn fine, long trail has been around a long time and almost always brews a consistent and clean example of what they are trying, chalk this up as a score in my book, damn tasty.

On-tap 2/6/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains smoked but light malts, caramel, some fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts with sweet flavors of caramel and fruit that are quickly followed by a strong smokiness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy. The hops presence is mild but brings a good balance. The after-taste is smoky and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, this a slightly different but solid smoked beer worth drinking for a while.
