Brewed by:
Long Trail Brewing Co.
Vermont, United States

Style: Smoked Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
A deeply malty brown ale featuring Cherrywood smoked Pale Malt, the toasty, malty flavors of brown malt, and balanced with Bravo and Mt Hood hops for a very traditional Northern Bavarian smoked beer. The beer is a deliberately malty product, with a firmly biscuity, toasty aroma that well carries that smoke imparted from the malt. A fantastic accompaniment with smoked meats, fish or cheese, this beer is a wonderful Autumn elixir on its own. A treat for the aficionado of classic styles, this product will have very limited distribution.

Growler filled at Carmel Beverage, Carmel, NY

Pours clear typical brown ale brown. Moderate tan head, quickly goes to a film, a collar and leaves just some spotty lace.

Smells like a lightly smoked pork shoulder, which is a good thing.

Smooth n' malty, with more light smoke. Moderatly dry/hopped finish.

Some went inot a pork tenderloin marinade and some being enjoyed during the ball game.

Pleasing and easy drinking. Worth a try if ya like a malty brown ale with a moderate smoke infusion.

Appearance is chestnut brown with adequate head.

Aroma is distinct smoke, must with a hint of peat. No hops detected.

Taste enters strong but smooth. Definite smoky sweet character with a slightly tart fade. Enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. I very much like this smoked ale. Rather creamy actually. Smoke does not deter from overall enjoyment. Easy to stomach.

$6 at Meadhall, Cambridge MA

An intensely smoked Bavarian brown ale. If I had my druthers I would have entered this in a general "smoked ale" catagory. It's not a lager so it's not a true Rauch. Whatever.

Shy, thin head that's quick to cringe into a small collar. Deep chestnut color.

Smells just like teriyaki beef jerky. I've had smoked beers that smelled like bacon and smoked ham but never teriyaki beef jerky. I like it.

Tastes like it smells: teriyaki beef jerky. Mild English brown ale underneath which since this says Bavarian brown is probably more of an Alt. Tastes English-y to me. Smoke gets to be a little cloying in the aftertaste.

I sure to love me some meat flavored beer. Those less inclined to smoked ales probably won't like it as much.

On-tap 2/6/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains smoked but light malts, caramel, some fruit and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts with sweet flavors of caramel and fruit that are quickly followed by a strong smokiness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy. The hops presence is mild but brings a good balance. The after-taste is smoky and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, this a slightly different but solid smoked beer worth drinking for a while.

On tap at the BBC Manchester.
Comes to the table a medium to dark brown with a smallish off white head that never seems to muster much of anything. Smells of smoke meat and charred wood with a bit of caramel and chocolate to round things out a bit. Light earthy hop aroma jumps in but is overpowered by campfire. The flavor is rich and malty with lots of caramel and chocolate tempered with a bit of smoked ham and bacon. It tastes better than I'm describing it really. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Nice experimental brew, nothing too complex, but a nice drinker just the same.

A-Pours a toasty amber. Body is clear. Head is very thin. Soft lace.

S-Smoky. Campfire and cured meat. Not as intense as some Rauchbiers, but its close.

T-The fire grounds and bacon saltiness win over my palate. That's the majority of the flavors. The intensity isn't overbearing. Some residual sweetness on the back after your palate adjusts to the smoke.

M-Drinks easier than expected. Kinda fun to drink. No booze and an agreeable body.

O/D-Not a Rauchbier guy but I got down with this easily enough. A surprising pint that was memorable too.
