Appearance: Deep brown color. Off white creamy head. Some lace, good retention.

Aroma: Raisins, bready malt, caramel.

Taste: Dark ripe fruit, malty, not much from hops, low bitterness

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied.

Final Statement: Left no impression on me, just that it was lackluster.

I tried this beer on February 14, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto. The beer poured a reddish-brown with a very thin whitish coloured head. The aroma was malty, with some caramel sweetness. The mouthfeel was light, almost watery, and highly carbonated. The flavour is mainly malty, with a slight sweetness that gives way to some bitterness.

A - Pours a clear, dark dark ruby with a decent head that quickly falls.

S - Fruity, with a distinct berry aroma - blueberries, black currants maybe. Slightly sweet and buttery.

T - Bland, and surprisingly so for such dark beer. Maybe a touch of toastiness, and a little bitterness in the back.

M - Light body and low in carbonation.

D - Overall, this is incongruently bland and tasteless. The taste itself is not remarkably bad I suppose, but it's so incongruously not roasty that it's rather jarring.

This poured a nice and dark almost black, however it could use a lesson in head retention as it subsided pretty quick. Smell was a tad sour, not my thing really. Flavor of this stuff was a bit on the bland side, not much body with this beer at all. It is however relatively smooth and fairly easy to drink.

Overall, easy drinking, but nothing special. I don't plan on getting this one again.

Aroma offered little, a few whiffs of the roasted malt. Pours a dark brown color with ruby and garnet shades when held to the light. A very thin tan head hangs around throughout leaving small spots of lace. Hits the palate like a regular lager with some spicy hops. The bitterness is higher than I expected and is dominant over the malt. I was hoping for a little more malt body, but it is a thinner brew. A good froth in the mouth gets some coffee flavors released and the dark or roasted malts show their presence. Very easy-drinking. An acquaintance from Canada brought this to me direct. Cheers to Vince.

I had this at the Toronto beer fesitival and was pleasantly surprised. It pours a near black dark brown with a bubbly tan head. The aroma is a light mix of roasted malt, coffee and licorice. The taste is malty with a roasty character and some coffee grounds in there. Hop aroma and bitterness is extremely low. The finish is sparse and and crisp. I guess its what macro lager advocates would call 'clean'. The mouthfeel is thinner than a stout, and low in carbonation for a lager.

This was a very nice and refreshing beer on tap. Not too complex but not watery.

The last of my beers that I reviewed while on my vacation in Canada.

Served on tap at the Old Angel Inn

Appearance: coffee color with shoe leather brown edges. Small white head that leaves some sticky white lacings.

Smell: weak carmel malt and some tea-like hop notes. Not much

Taste: Cola like...probably due to the intense carbonation. Mildly sweet with a smoky finish.

Mouthfeel: light to medium bodied with a disappointing watery finish.

Drinkability: Easy quaffing and overcarbonated. One of the better beers I had in Canada but this leaves a lot to be desired....

No aroma, no distinct taste. Another Ontario sweet malty lager.Reasonable dark appearance and large bubbles. Bland taste. Passable drinkable. Thanks for sample Pootz/Pootzboy. Strong carbonation, fizzy, and a twistoff cap subtract from the experience. Light to watery mouthfeel.

Bottled. Poured a nice garnet color with a better cap than I;ve seen on other GL beers...but the lacing is not great. No nose to speak of slight whiffs of grain over sweet burnt carmel. fizzy mouth feel and a tad watery but....there are all detectable traits of a schwarzbier here....mild , toasty malt detected, some drying from hops in the finish that is joined by a charred astringency that is understated. The best thing from this brewer and would not be a bad Canadianization of the schwarzbier were it a bit more malted and less fizzy spritzer qualities.

It's been a while waiting for this one to make it's appearance. It's been shown about at local beer shows but not served up or made generally available, but has now finally made it's way to the shelves of the local LCBO.

Of the beers Great Lakes (Ontario) makes, I think this is their best effort having more character than their other two beers. That said, it still has basic flaws that the other GL beers have - too thin, too spritzy, not enough presence.

Pours dark with a moderate head, just skimpy lace. Slight dark malt aroma with some plastic. Thin tastewise, but finished up with some nice grain/biscuit notes and a pleasant nutty dryness. Carbonation is just enough to be distracting without adding to the experience.
