one of this month's project x beers, a collaboration between Eric/Viggo from Biergotter and Simon at Great Lakes. a rye beer with roasted yams and fenugreek. sampled on cask @ great lakes on oct 8/09.
pours a nice brown color with a bit of haze (probably from the yams). it shows a bit of red highlighting at the edges. a small dense dark tan/light brown head forms, dropping slowly and leaving lots of spotty lace.
aroma is good. light maple. lots of rye spice. some tumeric and light indian spice notes. caramel and a bit of toffee. treacle. multi-grain bread and biscuit. touch of cracker. light alcohol. just a hint of citrus. light coffee and licorice notes.
taste is great. coffee. maple. light rye spice. multi-grain bread and rye bread, lightly toasted. nice deep caramel and malt profile that i'd expect in a good english ale, yet with a clean american yeast profile. light alcohol. the spice and malt really blossom, especially as it warms. the spicy character is quite mellow and really seems to lighten the overall perception of the beer. low bitterness level.
mouthfeel is good. medium body with a fairly drying finish. medium-light carbonation is about right on cask and works for the style.
drinkability is great. i just kept going back for glass after glass of this one, and i'm generally not a big fan of pumpkin or related spiced beers. great balance. nice subtle and complimentary spice character. great depth. i really liked this one. good stuff!
