Tallboy can from Maud's Variety; dated Dec 21 2021 and served at cellar temperature.
Pours an opaque inky black colour with brick red highlights; half a finger of creamy, light tan-coloured head is briefly seated atop, but fizzles off within a minute or so. A tight collar is the only noteworthy remnant, with little in the way of lace. Hints of vegetal pepper and smoke on the nose, but for the most part it's roasted malts, cocoa, coffee grounds and cinnamon.
Very interesting - subtle in some ways, but the pepper is no slouch. Cocoa, prune and chocolate cake at first, with the spiciness creeping up on you - and in near-perfect sequence, too - first the cinnamon, and then that smoky chipotle pepper heat. They both linger on well into the aftertaste; if you've ever eaten a handful of cinnamon hearts, it's kinda like that at first, but the chipotle heat manages to last even longer, and there's some of that cocoa bitterness and coffee roastiness mixed in there, too. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation that weakly nudges the palate; the pepper heat leaves the tongue feeling tingly. Not something I could drink all night, but one serving is a nice treat - would've paired nicely with the venison chili I made a few days ago.
Final Grade: 4.09, an impressive A-. I can't say that I've had a ton of chile beers (maybe half a dozen, tops), but I will say that GLB's MTP Porter Picante is easily one of the best I've had so far. The heat level is just right for my tastes: too much heat can make the session a chore, and if there's too little then it becomes a "why even bother?" situation. Additionally, the cinnamon pairs very well with the chipotle spiciness - combine all of that together with a solid base porter and you've got a damn fine chile porter. I cannot recommend this beer highly enough, and would buy it again without hesitation.
