Pale yellow with a soft white head, this "Octo Light" has tropical notes of grapefruit and mango with a touch of lemon zest. Although the body is light, each sip packs a wallop of Pacific Northwest hops.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from the Octo Boxset at my favourite LCBO at The Roundhouse Centre in nearby Windsor. My first beer from the Etobicoke, ON brewery.

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in GLB's Octo-Mix pack; dated Apr 25 2024 and served barely chilled.

Pours a foggy, translucent pale golden colour, with an inch of loose, soapy white head sizzling off within two or three minutes' time. It flings several strands of sticky lace about in the process, which eventually leaves behind a thin, frothy collar and a filmy cap. Subtle aroma that brings to mind tropical fruits, e.g. mango, passion fruit and pineapple. A little bit of citrus and stone fruit in there, too, as well as a hint of wheaty malts.

It's a little on the watery side, but it's only 3.6% so I'm gonna cut it some slack here as the flavours are tasty, and also relatively robust for such a light pale ale. I'm getting light notes of lemon, melon and underripe stone fruit, backed by a grainy, wheaty backbone that adds a touch of pale malt sweetness to the mix. Grassy conclusion with watery citrus flavours that fade to dry in the aftertaste; almost like mineral water at the end. Very light in body, with average carbonation that lends some crispness to this brew's thin, watery mouthfeel. It's effortlessly easy to pound, and refreshing to do so.

Final Grade: 3.91, a respectable B+. I've reviewed dozens of session IPAs at this point, and I think it's fair to say that even when they're well-brewed, they're never going to impress me the way a quality regular-strength IPA can... and that's ok, I'm not required to like each 'type' of IPA equally. Octo Lite is a pale shadow of its big brother Octopus Wants to Fight, but at 3.6% that shouldn't be all too surprising. Taken for what it is - an ultra-light session IPA - it really is pretty good, but their Sunnyside Session IPA is considerably better IMO. Try it for yourself and see what you think.

Pours cloudy straw with a chunky but shortlived cap. The aroma is light lemon and tropical fruit hops with some grainy pale malts. The taste is lemony and bready with moderate hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is light and somewhat watery. Light bitterness and lingering fruit in the finish.

A nice session IPA, but on the restrained side.

473ml can from the Octopus summer pack. Canned April 25, 2024. LCBO purchase.

Appearance - Mildly hazy, light coppery color. Two fingers of rocky egg shell white head with good staying power.

Smell - Plenty of citrus aromas, grapefruit is most prevalent but a nice medley.

Taste - Light citrus with a healthy grainy backbone. Fairly sweet all things considered and the grain stands out more than the citrus. Quite flavorful.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied with expressive carbonation. Quite crushable and very easy to drink.

Overall - One of the best of the light IPA's on the market with very good flavor and feel for a 3.6% ABV brew.
